Around £2,500 to spend on a car....

My current car doesn't look to be too hopeful for its coming MOT, so as a result, I'm likely to need a replacement.
It's for a 45 mile round trip commute, 30 miles of which is motorway, the rest inner city.
I'm after something with a decent amount of boot space as I spend a fair amount of time mountain biking so want a car with enough room to get the bike in. I was thinking focus sized or larger.
I was attracted to various diesels, but I'm a bit unsure of maintainance issues and costs down the line since I'm going to be buying reasonably high mileage cars. I'd ideally like something fairly economical but not totally gutless on the motorway.
I have a few focus zetecs fairly locally to me with around 55k on them for £1,600 which seem okay as spending less would be beneficial if possible, any likely drawbacks to them?
