Sorry all, got a rather dull car comparison question. My girlfriend and I are wanting to buy a city car. We've narrowed down to two favourites, vw up (move up trim) 2012 and the hyundai i10 2010-2012 mark 1 (comfort>) trim.

I personally prefer the up but the gf keeps telling me how much more you get for your money with the i10 and I do agree, you can get a newer higuer ttim level in the i10 for at least £1000 less than the up. But I find the i10 quite ugly, obviously I'm the shallow one. Has anyone tried both and got any reasonable arguments for/against either.i'm more interested in how the drive and reliability rather than the equipment but it's still relevant.
Thanks

I don't think she prefers the i10 it's just better value for money and I do feel that you're paying for the badge with vw but I do prefer the look of it to the sister cars, mi and citigo. Are there any strong arguments for the up over an i10? Another negative for vw I've heard is their parts are expensive and I have assumed hyundai would be cheaper.

Yeah, i think basically its a case of, if i want the up then i can pay the extra that it will cost to get one over the i10. I really need to sit in both and take them for a spin first, but on looks its the up for me.
thanks

Unfortunately the new i10 is still too expensive, at least £7500-8000. They were doing some nice deals on them from new though on finance option but still more than i'd want to pay, looks nice though.

I don't mind the citigo or the mi but i do prefer the look of the up, but you're right, they might be a worthy compromise if there are significant differences in price. In a way its silly to consider looks anyway when you're inside the car looking out most of the time!

I have driven an aygo and one thing i didn't like was the very light accelerator pedal, i found myself constantly over revving it. I found the same in the new yaris-this could just be down to the electronic pedals which just don't seem to have much feel behind them. The aygo clutch was more annoying, hopefully this isn't common to all new cars, i like a bit of resistance.

Thats good to know about the seat position, the old i10 is a very upright car-seems taller and to have more space than many city cars although dimensions wise its very similar to the up which surprised me. Driving position is quite important, my girlfriend felt like her head was on the ceiling in the aygo and visibility out of the windscreen not great consequently.

It seems to me its like most things you buy, there are economy options and luxury options and the up is the luxury option of city cars-overall design and performance. The car will be driven for 40 miles a day on A roads and motorway but only for a short distance so i have assumed a 3 cylinder engine in the up could cope-the i10 has a 1.2 4 cylinder i believe (not counting "blue" model).
