Are Mercs the new Audis?
Discussion
I don't have much interest in cars but I've noticed lately that Mercedes seem to have changed their model line up from boring old grandad to aggressive young wannabe stylee; al la noughties era Audi strategy. Lots of flashy bits, chrome stuff, aggressive 'aero' glued on trinkets, silly wheels & badges, more exhausts than you can shake a stick at, stupid LEDs etc
They (round here at least) are also now driven by complete wkers who want to look like they're amazingly more successful than yow. So just wondering really, have Mercedes taken on where Audi have left off? Is Audi becoming more grown up?

S-Line, AMG, M Sport et al.... all the same.
Although I do now tend to find Merc drivers a tad more enthusiastic to see the contents of my boot than any of the others.
I tend to think that BMW have 'grown up' more than Audi tbh.
Perhaps BMW are becoming a bit staid in what they offer?
Not aspirational to the young get-up-and-goer anymore.

Maybe it's a perception thing but Merc seem to change their lineup way too often - too many facelifts.
Also there seem to be lots of pretty basic A, CLA and C class cars with ridiculous AMG kits and huge wheels on them.
Audi, despite any faults, are at least reasonably dull looking cars vs. some barried up thing.

My last few cars have been older Mercedes and when it came time to change car this time I had already decided that as much as I like Mercedes I am not 100% taken on some of their newer models or styling.
It doesn't help that they seem to have lost their way styling wise for the last few years and the quality issue with rust etc is a memory that wont be easily forgotten.
I know the newer Mercedes are supposed to be better that way but the number I see being driven in a aggressive manor is growing & they certainly seem to have taken the position over from Audi/BMW round where I like for sure as the car that's tailgating/pushing/being a general wally.

Manufacturers simply give the market what it wants. Finance, marketing and product placement has made cars that were once the preserve of older generations accessible to young people and has made those young people want cars that are personalised in the way singers and footballers personalise their cars.

Merc realised their buyer profile was 50+ and are now trying to appeal to a younger market to increase market shareThey (round here at least) are also now driven by complete wkers who want to look like they're amazingly more successful than yow. Every time I see a post like this I think "this poor guy must be a bit jealous and just lamely bashes x brand for no real reason, I bet he drives something st"They (round here at least) are also now driven by complete wkers who want to look like they're amazingly more successful than yow. profile clicked, stereotype confirmed.
I remember, back in the '80's, Mercedes and BMW were considered to be more upmarket than Audi, which was (and still is) considered to be an expensive VW. In fact, the front runners were Mercedes, BMW and Jaguar. Slowly, Jaguars became the left-field choice, and Audi went on equal footing with Mercedes and BMW. In addition, Lexus came about and they're a smidge below the front runners (whilst also being a bit left-field).
The way I see it is like this:
Mercedes - Old man
BMW - Sporty drive
Audi - Ultra-conservative
There is obviously a lot of overlap. I don't think Mercedes will ever lose its footing in the car hierarchy stakes because of their history.
