Got a call from my step daughter to put the spare on her car as she had a flat tyre. When I removed the wheel I noticed a big split where it looks like 2 tyres had been joined at the side! She bought 4 Firestone tyres from a place in Worthing 3 years ago and insists she's not had a new tyre since. Can anyone help shed some light or has anyone seen this before as I can't believe I've not noticed it before! I've heard of remoulds but sticking rubber on!?

The lighter rubber is an old tyre that's been cut and stuck onto a newer tyre or something like that.

There's 2 different colour of rubber and you see where they have cut through the writing!

And it's cut the writing on the side in a neat crisp line! There are 2 thicknesses of rubber and it the same on both sides. Have you seen this before then?

This.

Imagine of you had the tyre on a lathe and skimmed away a few mm, that's what you are seeing. Something has been rubbing on the tyre, if it was 2 stuck together then it would be the same on the outside.
It's the same on both sides.

So what you are saying is it's rubbed on something and worn away a sharp edge on both sides revealing fresh new rubber underneath!

It's obviously not clear in the pictures I will take the wheel to a tyre place and get them to look it at it.

Ok I'm slow and I need an ambulance but if that's due to running flat, it's the most precise neatly cut precise tyre wear I've ever seen. I will take it to garage when I'm realised from hospital and get some professional advice I asked for advice I should have known better really!

Not rubbing, run flat? It might have been but would that no show the cord on the top of the tyre if that is wear?

So what you're confident about is that they stuck two tyres together, but you never noticed the difference in tyre colour or the mismatched writing on the side. ...
If I was confident about that I would not be making a dick of myself on here!

I can see what you are all saying now but have never seen this before. I found it incomprehensible that someone would stick rubber to the edge of a tyre and for what gain! But that is what it looks like to a tyre novice which I clearly am. I guess I find it hardest to accept that my step daughter has driven on that tyre so under inflated that it would do that sort of damage! I am not normally this slow on the uptake but at least I have amused you all tonight with my ignorance frown
