Sorry for doing this, but I'm stumped and have no petrol head friends to have the discussion with ......
The situation I have it that the wife has started a new job, it's a 25 mile commute, 3 times a week (total 150 miles). When she's not at work, she'll be pottering around town.
Our current 2nd car is a Mazda 5 Sport that was relegated to number 2 after I ended up with a new company car. During the time I had the 5, I was commuting all over and it's now dead on it's wheels with interstella mileage, dead AC compressor etc etc)

So I'm looking to replace it before it croaks and get an ear bashing.
Budget wise we have a max of 4K. I'd be looking for something economical and reliable.
Wife has decreed it's would be nice to be a five door ( I disagree given that son now drives too). Can't be a Fiesta as son has got one and 'we can't match', oh and it can't be red.

Been looking around on the net and showing her the cars that I can see that match and we seem to have got down to a pick list of :
Suzuki Swift
Toyota Yaris
Vauxhall Corsa

Have TD'ed a Swift, diesel and was quite impressed, although the engine was rather loud and the breaks on this one were quite bad (apparently all cars do that sir when they've been sat on the forecourt for a while).
Also TD'ed a Yaris - which I hated just on the interior, but the wife quite liked.

Can't have an MX-5 as it's 'sporty', Can't have a VW, as it's a VW (don't ask). Looked at a C3 and got a firm 'No'
Thoughts on the above , any other suggestions more than welcome.
