Afternoon All,

Been toying with the Idea of replacing my Alfa 156 with a Mazda Rx8, it would be my daily car.

Seem to be able to pick up a reasonable condition RX8 for less than £2k at the moment.

Before I start looking too seriously, What do I need to know about these cars? I've done a bit of reading about the "hot start problem" which is apparently common.

But anyone care to share personal experiences of ownership? What do I need to look for?

Thanks

Have you driven one yet?
Not Yet, I haven't got too serious with the idea of buying one just yet.
I just quite like the look of them, interiors don't seem to shabby and appear to be able to pick them up pretty cheaply!

So wanted a few opinions on them before I get too cosy with the idea.

You really, honestly shouldn't bother.

They are neither unique enough or special enough to put up with the problems of that engine. I really applaud Mazda for trying something different, but at the end of the day it was just too watered down as a driving machine, too low on power, and the implementation left a lot to be desired.

Instead Honda S2000, BMW E36 328/M3 etc.
Interesting you mention the S2000 as that is also on my "maybe" list... But insurance seems quite high on them

Thanks for all the information guys, I think I will do a little more homework on them.

And it sounds like the only way I'm going make my mind up is if I take one for a reasonable test drive.

What are servicing costs like with these?
Are garages funny about them? or are garages not bothered by the rotary engines?

I know we've mentioned oil cost...

Oh Dear... After all the reading I have done, I'm more undecided about trying one out than ever before (trying ownership that is)...

I think the only way I'm going to decide if I really like them is to stop sitting behind my keyboard, go out and drive one. THEN decide if I like it enough to "take the risk".

It appears the RX8 is bit of a 50/50 Car when it comes to the opinions out there...

I've found a reasonable 2006 not too far from me, so might see if I can get a test drive tomorrow.
