Thinking about buying a dedicated sports car. Something a bit friskier/exciting then my m3. Ideally a f430 would be the option. But 20k doesn't buy that so what are my other options?

S2000
Boxster s
997 911
Cayman s
Z4m
Tuscan
Noble?-

?

I really like a good noise and 300+ bhp and hopefully 1400kg and less and high revving.

E90 m3 v8 or m5 v10's engine in a z4m would be ideal I think

I might add this car will be used for a commute.

I already have m3 race car and 550bhp m3. 911 I fancy but not sure if it's really any good? I tried a 996 and it was pants compared to stock e46 m3

How does the cayman compare to the 911.

i guess im after something nible and more hard edged and something a bit more atmospheic sounding. The m3 soudns great, but its more race car sounds than velvet noise like a v6/v8/v10.

I have looked into tvr in the past but the build quality always put me off.

Have to admit this would be perfect. Not so sure on the lazy v8 though? was that keen on the e63 amg s cos im used to 8500 rpm shifts. like a screamer me.

been a while since i looked at nsx, and no they are not in budget! miles out!

Dont think a clubsport stripped 996 911 c2s will offer much of a difference experiance to an m3 to be worth the effort/money?

I truly don't get the fascination with rpm numbers. If the tacho had no numbers on it, you'd never know the number anyhow. You'd just get noise and feel the profile of the power curve.

LS engines certainly aren't lazy stock IMO. And as you seem happy modding, then a simple cam swap will make them change their character.

e.g. if this had no numbers or different numbers on the dial, would you really be able to tell?

that certainly does shift and makes a nice noise!

Personal preference i suppose. I didnt get on with the AMG's cos wanted to rev it out more! Might change with some decent exposure i suppose.

absolutly adore the noise of the v10. However the m5/m6 is a step in the wrong direction.

Flavour of the day for me is the noble M12.

That could be just the ticket. 1000 kg 350 bhp v6 supposed amazing steering feel and british!

Shame they were not just a little cheaper

Perhaps VX220 i can also investigate today.

Cayman S apparantly isnt that great on track due to oil starvation issues. But general consensus is it is more driver focus/enjoyable than the m3.

Todays research then
M12 - Love the "race car" style and apparently fast and involving
Tuscan - Potentially constant problems
VX220 - Too impractical for daily usage?
Cayman S - Perhaps just too slow / not good enough for track - but would be good on the drive to track
S2000 - cheap, light, perhaps numb on the steering? perhaps lack of power but would be economic at least
Cerbera - ?
