As the title suggests what car or brand had the most influence on you as a child? I ask this because my father was in the motor trade and I can remember his cars from, ooh, maybe the age of 5. That would be 1974 by the way...............

So for me it is the SAAB.

I remember him doing handbrake turns in the original 95 wagon!. I also remember the 96's with the freewheel. I remember asking constantly " When are you going to get one of those 99's dad? "

And then probably at the age of 9 I remember him taking me for a blat in the new 99 Turbo. A black one (of course) 3 door with cheese grater alloys through Arkwright Town near Chesterfield (subsequently relocated I believe due to subsidence). There was an old boy on the pavement with a walking stick who just stopped and stared lol.

As I grew older the SAABs evolved of course. The 900 T16s. The 9000. Heuschmid tuned varients! Then the GM influence.....hmmm

Suffice to say as an adult I have owned 9 SAABs of various model/tune. Abbott have relieved me of a few quid....... wink

So guys, what's your poison?

Some great replies here fellas, thanks.

Straying slightly from Dad's influence, I can relate to the holiday theme very much.

Citroen SM's and Renault 5 Turbo 2's form various trips to the Cote D'Azur.

I remember one year when I was perhaps 15 we couldn't find a room so drove overnight from Grenoble to Antibes. We were in a Light metallic blue SAAB 900i flat front with four bloody great cibies on the front. We settled in behind a couple of locals and all three of us drove 'briskly' over the mountains and down to the coast.

Brilliant!

LOL

I remember Dad recalling how he was stopped by the BIB one evening on the motorway after going flat out in a Classic 900 Turbo T16s. It would have been 135 plus and they couldn't catch him. They intercepted him ahead in their SD1s and he pulled over. Technology not being what it is now they 'agreed' on 90 and he was given a ticket accordingly. smokin

For the benefit of those who have mentioned the TVR wedges here's a small realisation of my own, my old 450se from a few years ago just after I refurbed the wheels............

Wow, that brings back memories of my first car - a 1985 900i Sedan (4-dr). It was actually my Dad's car from new, which I learnt to drive in, until he gave it to me when I was 19. Loved driving it, although the lack of a left-foot rest was a bit of a pain. In hindsight, I'm sure he was thinking it was probably the safest place for me to be when I inevitably crashed it (that fate had to wait for its replacement!), but I just thought it was the coolest first car possible. Well a Turbo 16S probably would have been cooler, but that wasn't going to happen

As sad as it is to say, this old Swedish barge actually did seem to appeal to the chicks when I was at university. It might not have had the GTi street cred of my classmates' Rover 216 or Nissan Sunny, but the Saab certainly seemed to hold some attraction (it wasn't my chat-up lines for sure anyway biggrin)

I note that your one was de-chromed. I think that was an additional "sport"-pack at the time, which mine didn't have, but can't remember the name of it. Any idea?
Hi my knowledge doesn't stretch that far, sorry!

Here's a curve ball for you...........anyone remember these? For a while Dad's company were the sole UK concessionaires for these. Turning up to school as a 16 years old I felt like bloody royalty!

Answers on a postcard please!

Really liked them. Never seen one in the flesh mind.
Certainly is. IIRC came in 2.9 a.d 3.9 flavours. GM underpinnings. Opel Senator engine. Rare as hen's teeth then, more so now.

Even at 46 years old I still stop on occasion just to look at something. I drive past Long Stratton Motor Co fairly regularly (mainly Lotus and Aston with a few Morgans) and recently they had a Caparo T1 in. Fortunately I don't have to find an excuse to stop as there is a fuel station right in front of the showroom wink
