You should log it with the Police (although they will probably respond with the usual apathy as it's not speed related) and personally I wouldn't bother with insurance, just get it fixed locally. If you don't use the key anyway just silicone the thing up in the meantime!

If you report it to the police it will effect your insurance if you report to them or not. It's just not worth the bother. If had your No.plates stolen yes report it but otherwise, they are not interested and its just another report clime in your area.
