I've had my renewal letter through today for my car insurance at £398 (that's a year - sorry to the 17 year olds out there but there are advantages to being 42laugh). Deciding I can do better than that I go onto a website that allows me to compare the market. Renewal comes through at £298 - with the same company I'm with but I get that.

This is the odd bit - my compulsory excess was £95, and the voluntary was £250. When I changed the voluntary to £0 I expected the premium to go up & it didn't - it came down to £281.

So why would this be?

Again, apologies to the teenagers who probably pay that per month, but then again you can sleep through the night without having to get up for a pee so meh.

New customer price and renewal prices often aren't the same.
Have you checked every detail, are you sure it's exactly the same policy?

I'm sure if you ring your current insurer and give them the reference number for your quote, and the policies are identical, they'll match it.
I try that every year & they can never match it and yes, details are exactly the same - apart from another years NCD and obviously the £0 excess. I've been with the same company now for 4 years and have never renewed.
