So , today I have read and written on the thread about the new caterham 620s , which I am particularly interested in as I own a caterham k series with about 200bhp and I use it on the road mainly and enjoy it massively .A few people have commented that the new 620 has too much power for the road , which my immediate reaction Was NO WAY !! But on reflection maybe it is just not usable on our roads ?? So with this in mind I wondered how many other cars could fall into this catergory , new focus RS ? All the high power German saloons ,m5 amg rs6 etc , Anything over 500bhp ? Are car manufactures producing cars with too much power we simply cannot use ? Or is it just for bragging rights ?

Holy mother of lumping feckery!

Just to be clear, that's actual power as opposed to power/weight ratio?

This needs a thread readit

Having lots of power is a satisfying thing, I have a CLS63 and it makes a bit over 500bhp. It's a big car, it's comfy and it's very quick. Do I use all the power very often? Hardly ever, especially as it comes in at 6,800rpm but it's nice to know it's there.

Having said that I also own an RenaultSport Twingo, which has a massive 131bhp. It's easily as satisfying to drive because you can use 131bhp without doing crazy speeds, it handles brilliantly and is very engaging.

So no, I don't think you need loads of power, some of it is wasted but then I wouldn't want a big heavy car that was underpowered. I'd rather have the power there if I rarely use it.
So I guess power is important for some and not others , and some can enjoy both sides of the coin , and most people never really use all the performance their cars can deliver , I guess its just nice to know you have the power just if you fancy !

could the Cayman / boxster hit the usable sweet spot for power on our roads , it has to have a good shout I guess it will always be known as the poor mans 911 , but is so much better than that !

I had an X Pack Escort RS2000 and a 3dr Sierra RS Cosworth at the same time, the Escort had half the power of the Sierra but was more fun to drive most of the time. Wish I still had them.
Hi , I had a escort mk2 1600 sport with a 2litre Zetec , on 185 tyres its was so much fun to drive ! I guess not to be used every day , weekend only which opens another can of worms !

So power is king , hot hatches will just keep getting more powerful , and it perhaps a little sad that's why we upgrade to the next best thing , or more powerful thing , so let's expect a 600 bhp hot hatch by the time my 13 year old son is old enough to drive . Just glad he cannot afford to insure it 🤓👍 makes my old fiesta 1.3 super sport look a little silly now , ah them were the days .
