So, what car(s) have you yet to own but wanted to own for the longest?

Growing up in the 80s and 90s, my allegiance switched between the latest Porsche or Ferrari, interspersed with the odd piece of Americana but I can't really pinpoint one model specifically.

When I was very young, I thought classic Beetles were super cool. My best friend bought one as his first car in sixth form before he had passed his driving test. It was a 1973, had been lowered and tuned so that it was just slow not really slow and it looked fantastic but unfortunately it caught fire when his mum was driving it and by the time the fire brigade arrived, it was burnt back to a bodyshell (she was OK BTW)! That kind of killed my desire to own one but I did hire a Type 2 camper for the weekend a few years ago and it didn't break down or catch fire!

Another was the Peugeot 205 GTi. Always loved these and finally got to own a Laser Green 1.6 at 22 and it didn't disappoint. I may still like to own a 1.9 one day but feel that the scratch has largely been been itched.

Another car that left a lasting impression was a 4.0 Jeep Cherokee Limited belonging to the father of a friend that he was allowed to "borrow" occasionally. Other friend's parents had Discoverys but this seemed so much cooler. 15 years later I was driving my newly purchased 4.0 WJ Grand Cherokee home, grinning like a schoolboy having moved to Canada and finally petrol being cheap enough and there being enough snow to justify me having one! Sadly, the ownership experience was traumatic though with a series of expensive breakdowns and 18mpg on a good day!

Ironically, with my general ambivalence towards the proliferation of 4-pot turbo performance cars today, the two that have eluded me and I expect will continue to do so are both...4-pot turbo performance cars!

The Delta Integrale because I remember watching it dominate the RAC Rally during my most impressionable years and the Ford Sierra Sapphire RS Cosworth 4x4, not because of rallying (it was actually a bit pony as a rally car) but because my older cousin had "fast" Fords in the early 90s (Orion 1.6i Ghia, Sierra 2.0 Ghia, Sierra XR4x4) and it was the "ultimate" road car that him and all his friends ultimately aspired to. These two had a permanent spot up on my bedroom wall throughout my teenage years!
