A few cars have got away recently that I have taken a fancy to so the hunt continues. I am driving North tomorrow to see my new Nephew and, by chance, these 3 cars are pretty much directly on my route.

BMW 650i

Lexus LS 460

CLS 500

I plan on seeing the first 2 tomorrow morning.

I spoke with one of Jay's clan and she was very nice and knowledgeable.

The BMW appeals because it is a manual but cramped if I need to take the family.

The Mercedes has a good spec but I am not sold on the looks.

The Lexus appeals because of the spec and service history but will it be too bland over time?

There is another 650 in convertible form also which may be interesting.

A nice chap called Pat owns the black with red leather one which is the same colour combo as my old Z4. Not sure how it will be on the 6 series. I think £12500 for the silver one is steep but they are rare but does that command a premium; it all depends on if you want a manual.

Parkers has the value of the various 650s at around £8500 and WBAC at £7000.

Any ideas on a realistic price for one as £10995 and £12500 seem a long way from Kansas!

First port of call would be a ZHP knob - makes the world of difference having a smaller but weightier one (that's what my wife says anyway biggrin)

An update:

CLK 500 - really wanted it but sold the day I could get back to pick it up. My programme changed and I was away.

E55 AMG - did not think I had the minerals to buy (I'll hand my card in on the way out!). Lots of people saying they had spent £5 - 10k to get issues sorted which would spoil my enjoyment. Would love one on the journey I am doing today and, I guess, still an option if I man up!

Lexus LS460 - just left it. Exactly what you would expect in a Lexus. However, the interior was a bit worn on the arm rest and around the seat belt A pillar. Possibly could be made straight but would irritate me. Lots of moisture on the rear arm rest but could be as a result of the fridge being there. The great service history is why it appeals.

BMW 659 - not seen either of them........ yet!

Seeing both BMWs on Wednesday.

Arguably the Lexus is the better cruiser with more kit etc it may lack the excitement that I would want. The flare of a V8 with a breathed on exhaust, the ability to select the gear you want and the coupe shape is what I desire more.

Spoke to the black coloured car's owner yesterday and he seems like a nice chap but I have noticed that it does not seem to have bum warmers? I do like the silver one and they are within 5 miles of each other. The bit I don't like as much is the price.

Another update:

Went to look at the silver BMW 650 today and all good.

The car has hardly a mark on it other than a small scratch on the front near side alloy. Body work is great as is the interior.

New discs and pads all round with the only advisory on the MOT of slightly corroded brake pipes but that has been the same since 2009 (any idea on cost to change?). Tyres are Bridgestone Potenza run flats with good tread and the ride, surprisingly, was not bad at all and no tramlining (my Z4 was terrible for it!).

Car drove well with the power you would imagine, no shimmy or shaking and braked hard and straight.

The exhaust has switchable baffles giving the choice of V8 bark (a little OTT for long distance cruising) or push the button in the key fob and it switched to quiet V8 like it came out if the factory.

If I want to go ahead we have agreed on £11,000 which is reasonable I think?
