Hey guys/girls..

first off my name is sam and i am am new to this site...

I am sorry if this is in the wrong section I had a quick look and nothing jumped out as a more appropriate place to put this thread.

ok

so I have recently passed me test and I am looking for a first car, I am 30years old and live in a mid to low risk area apparently, basicly I am finding it very hard to get competitive car insurance and I have no idea why I have a motorbike and have a few years no claim I have no convictions work in a stable job all that.. I did the usual thing of finding a cheap as chips banger with a small engine tried a quote on a few of the sites got all the same results

corsa c 1.2lt basic model i was getting quoted over 3 grand
corsa c 1.0lt basic model best part of 3 grand
pug 107 same sort of price

I googled around and found alot of news articals from teenagers complain about having to pay 2g when im 30 and i wish i got quotes that low.

I even rang direct line and spoke to them and they said to me if i was under 25 and fitted a black box i would get 25% discount but as im over 25 I can only get 60quid back a year, 60quid of 3grand isnt much but 25% would be...

whenever i google new drivers i find advise ect and investigations by magazines always the same shizz "young driver this young driver that" cant find any help for me a mature new driver...

anyway then I thought sod it did a comparison for insurance on a 2lt astra vxr... result 1.6 grand but with a massive excess same for the corsa vxr... so then i thought ok this company likes me so I went back though it with them and did a quote for a corsa d 1.0lt got a quote for about 1.4 grand still with a 3 grand excess...

basicly its strange i get cheaper quotes on high powered cars but only with massive excess. I have searched around and I find it hard to get help as all websites advices is focus to new young drivers and insurance company dont seem to want to give me the good deals they give young drivers..

Is this normal has anybody else had something like this happen..

btw one of aprentce as work has a just passed got a ztech 1.2lt and hes paying 2g i do quote for same car get quoted way higher than that...

I dont mind the excess side of it just worried if i bin the car ill get put over a barrel but if this is normal for new drivers to get that kind of excess or pay though nose for first year Ill go with that... I am happy to have a slow car but dont want to tie myself up with 3years finance on somthing I will out grow in a year or 2...

any help would be fantastic thanks guys/girls

Ring up and speak to human being instead of relying on comparison sites.
thanks for reply.. Like I say I spoke to direct line though the on-line chat system they didn't seem to want to help me all they wanted to do was get me to insure my motorbike with them aswell and stated that I wouldn't get a good deal if even if i fitted black box.

I am wondering weather its a fault on the sites however, I realy does seem like the site just isnt working for me as a mature new driver.

Firstly, I entirely agree with the above. You're best to ring up and explain your situation to a real person (maybe a specialist broker), as they may be able to wrangle a huge discount for you considering your experience riding bikes (how long have you been riding bikes, any accidents?).

Unfortunately though, you are just in a bit of a difficult situation. It's relatively rare for people to start driving past the age of 30, and as such there's not a lot of incentive for insurance companies to be competitive for this subset (if they spent a lot of time working out the risks etc, there still wouldn't be much business to get), and I guess it's even more rare for that person to already have experience of riding bikes, which likely will make them a MUCH safer driver. I realise it's very annoying, but there might not be a way around it unless you find a specific company that will tailor their quote just for your situation.
thank you for the reply, I will ring around see if they can help me... Like I say it seems like the comparison sites just are not working for me as an individual..

I have been riding for 2 years never fallen or made a claim I also had motorbikes when I was teenager and never claimed then.

If it means that I have to get a high powered car and be very careful for a few years I will do that over tieing myself up into finance for a 1lt that ill be paying 2.7/3 grand insurance on just for the sake of getting a better excess..

Have you tried looking at cars that aren't the sort regularly crashed by new drivers? At the age of 30 you should also be able to get restricted mileage classic car insurance, and the definition of a classic isn't that restrictive these days.
sounds interesting.

I tried quotes on lots of cars, big ones small ones. sporty, family even 4x4s.. best quotes i have been getting is on vxr haha...

not tried classics though what would be a good example of a classic I could live with today???

hey thanks for all your help guys...

I rang admiral, at first they couldnt find me it was like I didnt exist then they asked for licence number and they found me, suddenly my quote dropped like a brick.

07 corsa VXR - 500 excess windscreen, break down all that £1114 quid but they wanted it up front witch isnt a problem

So now it seems that its because the comparison sites couldnt find me so i wasnt getting the best quotes...
