I am looking to buy another car finally and I have very picky requirements. It needs to be useable, fairly reliable (not so important), good looking (to me), but most importantly it has to be something you don't see very often on UK roads. Budget is around 4-5k excluding running costs.

Examples I'm already considering:
Chrysler Crossfire
Hyundai Coupé Siii V6
Ford cougar V6
Nissan Murano
Brabus Roadster Coupé
Renault Wind

Any other suggestions or any advice on what I already mentioned?

So far, we've got a range of suggestions from sodding great big five-seat fairly modern soft-roaders to insy-winsy modern two-seaters to '60s-on classics.

I can't help feeling the OP might want to clarify their requirements a snidge.
I think I've been clear but some people have lost the plot a little. 4-5k and reliable doesn't include a lot of the cars mentioned so far

Hold up, hold up people, just back the truck up.

I must clarify the fact the budget for buying the car is 4-5k max, th car must be at least somewhat reliable, easy-ish to live with and must be at least different if not rare.

So far I've seen all kinds of weird suggestions but bad ones include:
Mazda CX-7 (great car by way out of budget)
Volvo P1800 (lovely; now find a nice one fone less than 10k)
Cadillac (creative I'll give you that)
Some woody wagon (maybe if it didn't blow up after 3 miles and drink 2 fuel stations on the way)
And....
VW Corrado (sorry.... Just don't like VW cars, call me a moron if you like)

They can make sense now because they are still undesirable and as such very cheap, so is the OP just looking for something that offers a lot for his money? Otherwise he's just asking us to list all the undesireable cars we can think of.
Pretty much both of those things, I'm wired like that but take the Crysler for example; JC said it looked like a dog laying a log then everybody hated it. But now for 4K you can essentially buy a 3.2l, FE/RWD, "stylish", 2 door Mercedes Coupé with an electric spoiler, heated electric leather seats, a good sound system, enough tech to keep you happy and massive wheels.

Seems like a good deal as does a lot of these cars, ugly or not. But then again I owned a red Nissan Figaro before and thought it was the t**s.

Keep em coming lads and lassies. Also any advice on any vehicles already on my line up would be appreciated such as which ones are awful even by my unusual standards. Bare in mind my daily at the moment is a fairly rough MGB GT in orange....
List so far:
Chrysler Crossfire
Hyundai Coupé Siii V6
BRABUS roadster Coupé
Ford cougar V6
Ford puma (low mileage zero rust or get out)
Renault wind
Renault Avantine
Nissan Murano
Fiat Barchetta
Fiat Coupé
Suzuki Cappacino
Lexus SC430 (I must be barking)
...even the Vel Saits, god I'm strange

You can't go wrong with a 206cc (Peugeot, limited production model). Amazing performance and a great handling sports car.

Great image and folding metal roof which makes it more rigid for ultimate handling, or drop the roof for cruising and when you want to impress people or for them to notice you.

Mine was awesome, and they're bound to be collectors cars in a few years, a bit like the old GTi.

I've now moved on to BM, which are the best cars ever, but outside your budget really. Have you thought about monthly payments, with a deposit, that might be enough to get you into the BM range - all ultimate cars.
Would you be offended if I said I don't like Pegeout or BMW cars? Neither floats my boat for more than a few seconds, although some exceptions do pop up but they're way beyond my budget and even then I'm not sure I'd want one if I could afford one.

I'd go for the fiat coupe, preferably a 20v turbo. Although there can't be that many left?

Second choice would be an Alfa Romeo GTV, preferably a V6.
Id only go for the top of the range model on pretty much every car, so it would be the GTV6 or the 20v Coupé

Hence why I said the Hyundai 2.7l V6 Siii, or the BRABUS roadster Coupé, or the Cougar V6. The only one I wouldn't go top of the range on is the Crossfire because they're like 10k at the moment

There's a difference between unusual/rare and just plain daft for Uk roads.

One other thing I should point out is the cheaper cars on the spectrum id probably end up spending the rest of the budget on cleaning and fixing up to make them better, so while a Cougar V6 would only be about a grand, I'd spend a couple more on it to make it better.

Renault Wind? Get that off your list or i'll come stand by your local road and point and laugh as you go past.

Fiat Coupe 20v Turbo?
Celica GT-Four
Urm.... an old range rover

I need to go back and look at your criteria. I only saw "Renault Wind" and felt compelled to write this.
What's wrong with the Wind? Apart from the obvious poor name choice, it's a good little car I think.

Has nobody mentioned VW Phaeton?

OP it's like no other VW you will have seen or driven.
The only Phaeton I'd want is the W12 and those are hardly cheap

The 3.2 is a good car for what it is.
Anyone going to give me a small loan of a million dollars to run it for a few years?

for me though as much I like that I'd want a proper Busso V6 and be hunting down one of the late 3.0 GTV cup specials

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Alfa-Romeo-GTV-V6-/14198...

That one is over budget but if you're willing to do some work you can pick up one of the final Busso V6 variations that are holding value and are likely to start gaining value for under £5000

156 GTA is also in budget but the GTV has the looks to match the noise

Edited by andburg on Friday 6th May 10:00
I don't think Brittish racing green works on an Alfa Romeo, and while the GTV is nice I'd rather have the face-lifted version (please forgive me Alfa fans) plus I'm not sure I like the GTA, Alfa had the best styling in the mid 2000s with the Brera etc

Based on the OP's indecision I'd suggest a
Honda CR-Z
Although obviously not this goping example

That picture is just vile, I swear I'm going to be sick....

But I do like the CRZ standard and I have considered one but aren't they outside my budget but like 2k? I haven't looked at one for ages but last time I checked they were going for like 8k

I fondly remember this;

Suits exactly your criteria!!! A bloody epic car.
I do like these but they seem rather.... Slow
Not that it's a problem, but when the doors are the best part of the car, something may be wrong. I'll add it to the list but I'll need to drive one to be convinced

Its more about the dynamics on the SERA. Its a well balanced and revolutionary car and it has a panoramic targa top and special doors, helping it to have a very very very low drag coefficient. It looks special and makes you stand out. Its not really that slow either.

If I did go for that I'd end up spending a couple of grand cleaning it up to near new condition

It's clean up time I think. Here's the list so far:

Chrysler crossfire Coupé
Hyundai Coupé Siii V6
Renault wind
Ford cougar V6
BRABUS Roadster Coupé
Ford puma (no rust)
Toyota Sera
Daihatsu Copen
Renault Avantine
Nissan Murano
Fiat Coupé
Fiat Barchetta
(Discounted Lexus SC430 as its too much to run, Discounted the Cappacino as its just too small, Discounted the Nissan Vel Saits as its just not my thing)
So let's narrow this list down, so convince me what I should and shouldn't have.
Cars I'm keeping on the list no matter the suggestions, so the others are up for debate:
Crossfire
Hyundai
Murano
Cougar V6

Seriously? After all these cool suggestions, like the Copen and Sera, and maybe a 166, you've narrowed it to down to 4 derv boring cars that are in no way unusual? I'm out.
I haven't discounted them, the four I mentioned are the ones staying on the list regardless and all the others are up for debate
