So, my question is this - what is the greatest ever GT car.

EDIT

As gizlaroc mentioned in a post a few pages in, a GT car is something you'd want to jump in and drive to your holiday home on Lake Como, drive around for a week while you're there, then drive home again.

Since most of us don't have the need to drive at 210mph on rock-hard, low-slung race cars with number plates on, what makes a good GT car? What is the best for sale at the moment? What is the greatest GT ever?

I had a BMW 635d for a while, and that was a pretty good attempt. Quick, comfortable, quiet on the inside, and with a good range. Sounded a bit like a truck on account of it's diesel engine, but would happily sit all day at over 120mph, and although the experience was possibly a bit dulled, it was good at what it was designed to do.

So what now? What would be the best mix of parts?

For me, there would have to be a few requirements;
  • It has to be quick - 0-60 in sub 7 seconds
  • It has to fast - 160mph +
  • It has to be comfortable and spacious for 2 people, with enough luggage space for a week
  • It has to have a good range! 350 miles as a minimum. You won't always be needing that long range, but it's incredibly frustrating to fill up ever 200 miles. This figure is when you are in chill / cruise mode. No requirement for this to be achieved when driving fast or in anger!
  • It needs to sound good through a tunnel (so no diesels!)
  • It needs to have good looks - nothing too edgy or racy, but equally not too bland
(Yeah, I changed my mind. Sue me!)

Anything else? Is there anything on the market today that would truly be a fantastic modern GT car?

Alright alright..

So maybe 600 miles is a bit optimistic.

I'll change my requirements to +400 miles. It's still a long way!

Perhaps I should have made it clear that I'd like a long range on a long-run type of drive. Motorways / autoroutes / autobahns. Not in and about towns.... Even my auto Landcruiser will get close to 500 miles on a conservative run!

Love this subject!

Do the v12's mentioned genuinely get 3-400 miles?

The v8 Bently Conti is probably the perfect car but with the worst image!

No mention of a capri?
Is a Capri really a GT car at all? Bearing in mind the original question was for the best GT car. But hey, if you think it's the best, that's cool with me - there's no right answer! But plenty of wrong answers haha.

As for my original question - I wanted some suggestions for a genuinely good GT car - most of my miles are fast roads, I don't commute, and I love cars.

So it was kinda for some ideas.

And only last week I bought this (yeah, I've mentioned it once or twice in other threads but I don't care!)

Genuinely fast, comfortable, and with enough room inside for a few weeks on the road while two-up.

Some cracking suggestions on here though. If only I had an unlimited bank account... Ha!

To me a GT is something I would pick up the keys for, from the collection of cars sat in my garage of course, to pop down to Lake Como in.
I'm stealing this as a requirement. Brilliant!

You could drive a 1 litre eco boost there and back, likely with no issues. But given the opportunity, would you take that, or something else like a Quattroporte or 550... Easy choice for me!

I recommend taking the coastal road from Monaco through Genoa then up via Milan (out of rush hour) and on to Como. Did it in my Esprit, amazing.
I've been down to the Côte d'Azur a few times - usually on bikes though. Theses a ton of good roads all over! Les Route Grande Alps is a good ride. I very much enjoyed that last year...

I bought a W12 GTC when they first came out - and promptly drove it to the Med for a holiday. I thought it was the perfect GT.

I also had a Ford GT which I drove to the Med. Not the perfect GT - but was fun all the same.
Both of them are beauties. I'd love to spin either down to the south coast of France.

I think one of the most comfortable and classiest GTs would be a Bentley Azure. Top down motoring, a lovely V8 and old school slush box too. Not dynamic at all, but with a beautiful lady in the passenger seat and convertible stowed away... cruising on the Côte d'Azur, sea view to the right, Alps to the left, heading towards Monaco, and then Northern Italy... When I'm a multi millionaire!

Either that, or the gull-winged Mercedes 300 SL, in silver - but I fully acknowledge it's not going to be a great drive on the autoroute. But, once you're down there... what a vehicle to drive! Totally the fuel of my dreams.

Not suggesting a capri as my choice!! I was surprised a capri wasn't mentioned, we've had other classics, something like this would be alright wouldn't it?

Your car looks really nice btw.
Nowt wrong with that Capri! I really like them. The old Essex V6 sounds good with a full stainless sports exhaust too. I've fancied one for aaaaaaages!
