Disinterested dealers - why?
Discussion
Owing to change in circumstances I've been recently looking to buy a second car and possibly swap my bike. I've looked at a few options and been bemused by the lack of interest or follow up by some of the car and bike dealers I've come across. As an example, I went to local Toyota dealer having called and said I was interested in a 2nd hand Aygo. I made it pretty clear that I was looking to buy and needed a car for the following week. Young sales guy takes me out in one and then I ask for drive in newer model. He says that they can source cars from within the group so even if they don't have one suitable on site he could get one. Yet after spending ages away he comes back with just two examples (having checked myself afterwards on the Internet they had many more possible cars). I said I was interested in one of the two and offer a lower price. He goes off to check and comes back with a straight no. No attempt to meet me half way or offer anything else to get me to do the deal. I turn to the car we drove and make an offer...off he goes...comes back and says that someone already put a deposit on it. What is the point of showing me a sold car? Bizarre. He then says they are getting another similar car and he will call me on Saturday when it arrives. Except he doesn't. However, in the meantime, when I got home from local dealer I called their sister branch with the first car. Offer them deal. They don't accept but offer me something near the middle. I buy car.
I know dealers must get lots of time wasters but are they incapable of noticing when someone is waving cash in their face saying they want to buy that they shouldn't let them leave until they have bought something?

What deal did you offer? How much off? Was your offer on the phone to the sister dealership the same as the one I the branch?
Usually a stupid offer is met with a flat no.
It was the same offer. About 7% of the listed price. The car had already been discounted but the second dealer found a way to make me a customer by giving me a 3% discount. Usually a stupid offer is met with a flat no.

Showing you a sold car; perhaps the salesman wasn't aware that it had been sold and had made a mistake, or perhaps a deposit had been placed on it whilst you were out on a test drive?
As for the salesman not coming back to you regarding one coming into stock; be would likely have known that you purchased from their sister branch.
Yes it was a mistake but a pretty fundamental one when the sole purpose of your job is to sell cars.As for the salesman not coming back to you regarding one coming into stock; be would likely have known that you purchased from their sister branch.
Your second comment must be a joke or very worrying if when dealer sells cars they send around information to all other dealers that their car X has just been sold to Mr/ Mrs Y who live in town Z.

You appear to have encountered a crap salesman. Happens all the time. Or he didn't think he needed to punt it out cheaply, or you rubbed him up the wrong way, or did didn't get a blowy last night. Loads of possible reasons.
It wasn't just one. It was a handful. I only used him as an example of the lack of interest. I was thinking of swapping my bike and went to see and ride a couple of secondhand bikes. No follow up calls. Crap trade in offered on my bike. There was one dealer who was very good. I'm still thinking about the deal offered. My point was only that salespeople (I thought) get financially rewarded for sales and so I would expect them to make the running and try to make a deal happen. It seems odd to me that so many don't seem that interested in getting a deal closed.
