Just had a 318d hire car in Spain for a fortnight. Massively impressed with it. Motorway refinement exceptional, 1000km on a tank (a Euro a litre too) and plenty of poke. Superb nav and Bluetooth connectivity. Even has Rev matching on the downshift. Only negatives a relatively weak stereo and it seems a little easy to get the traction light on with what I presume are low rolling resistance tyres.

Another one I had. Never felt anything like the claimed 300 and a bit bhp. Good fun nonetheless

[quote=greghm]I have done this many times and I am always pushing to go there on holidays: USA.

The US is (or are ?) the best in regards to car rental. There is a lot of competition, this has been highly developped there over the years, and the pricing can be really different if you spend a bit of time searching.

The best car rental are: 1- Hertz, 2- Sixt, 3- Avis. Aim to have a Gold membership which is quite easy after a few rentals and then your rental prices go down, you get upgrades and they don't try to sell you the next model to rent.

I've turned up numerous times in the US with a pre booked car to a completely empty garage and a 2-3 hour wait for a car. Avis pretty awful if you fly in on a BA plane as everyone heads to the same desk. In Boston last year it was this or an unspecified wait. It was enormous; a lot of tunnels outside Logan and I ducked through every one

Delivery mileage (3 miles) Jag F-Type R from Thrifty. Technically was not abroad but was hired for a break in the UK. To say I didn't want to give it back was a understanment, brutally fast. Only downside was the sat nav sending us on some very odd roads at times, think we ended up on a farm track at one point..500 miles driven in it.

How much did that cost?? Unlimited mileage?

I saw an F30 3-series yesterday with LED headlights - I thought it was an unusual option and I was even more surprised to see it was on a 320d XDrive, and that it was a Thrifty hire car!
The 318d I started this thread with has LED headlights. Standard spec in "Europe" maybe?

15 years ago, myself and four uni mates did a month long trip around Spain and southern France. The cheapest/largest car we could get was a Peugeot Partner 1.9 D (naturally aspirated). It was so crap it ended up being brilliant! Drove it everywhere flat out, held it at vmax on the motorway for hour after hour (about 155kph), hit the limiter in almost every gear. It was a general rule to give it full revs and dump the clutch when setting off, surroundings permitting. It went flat out over speed bumps, up dirt roads in southern Spain, effectively abused for nearly 3,500 miles......and never missed a beat! It felt a French car of old, shocking built quality and no equipment but with rock solid and simple running gear. Im still odly fond of them today. Photo attached of the very car. For context a friend was trying to 'entertain' a Dutch girl in the back, hence us rocking the car about. Young and most certainly dumb we were
That sort of driving is mandated by the rental agreement isn't it??
