As the antithesis of the "Young people and sensible boring saloons" thread, I thought I'd start this.

Do you know of anyone who drives a modern car that's "too young" for them? I'm 45 and would drive something like a Sunbeam Lotus or 205 GTI as I grew up in the hot hatch era and that's OK. However, I wouldn't buy a new Focus RS or Honda Type R as I believe I'd feel foolish in it. A bit like wearing skinny jeans or a baseball cap.

Am I doing this right?

Speaking as a proper old git to some mere youth of 45- drive what the f***k you want, where you want and how you want . If somebody thinks your car is 'age inappopriate ' it say far more about them than it does about you . I'm 63 and about to go on a 1000 mile blat in a Caterham - tragic eh ?
Thanks, had a mid-life crisis moment there. I feel invigorated by the suggestion that I'm further away from death than many on here. biggrin

Caterham is an anomaly, anyone can drive one but if you are old you have to wear a flying jacket and goggles. It's the rules!

Christ! Talking about 40's being old? I am 68 and drive a Cayman as a daily. 20k miles per year.
You guys make me feel I should trade in for a Zimmer!
Also probably drink too much, smoke too much and my daughter asks me when I am going to grow up?
Answer? Never. Seen it and don't like the look of it.
Also feel about 25 so there!
Take solace in the fast that 25 year olds are posting questions about mpg and insurance premiums wink

Good advice although the only thing stopping me from buying more is space to keep them and time to drive them. On a related note I picked my 14 yo son up from Scouts last night in my trusty train station Saab. It wears its battle scars well but in spite of its obvious class, fine heater and legendary, comfy seats, he finds it embarrassing. Not helped by one of the other Dads calling it a 'shed' as I drove out. At least I put shoes on this time.

Atom on the school run this am, in amongst a mass of generic 4x4's and German saloons.

Sucks being old, it really does biggrin

This thread serves to remind the yoot that some of us have been there previously and remember thinking the same things wink

How's the Monaro?
Very well thanks, has the occasional electrical fit where a random sensor will complain through lack of use but I've found the more I drive it, the better it gets. Took it to American speed fest at Brands a few weeks back which was fantastic fun, even with the rain. On the way back on the motorway I gave it full throttle past an open top yank tank full of Rockerbillys. They all laughed and waved with V8-induced roar which put a massive, childish grin on my face. smile

I think people have realised you dont have to sit wearing a suit, reading the paper whilst smoking a pipe when you get to thirty, it isnt the 1950s.
Why didn't anyone tell me? 15 years wasted driving an Austin A40 and smoking old shag when I could have been vaping in a leased Golf R. The shame!

I’m 46, so not quite in the archaic brigade although some may disagree.

My last few vehicles include....

BMW M140i (current)
VW Golf R
Renaultsport Megane RS250

First car was a Mk1 Golf GTI which I bought at the tender age of 18 back in ‘91 for £995, and I’ve loved and owned a variety of hot hatches ever since.

Probably the most brutal car I ran was a Subaru Impreza P1, which was an utter beast point to point and a fantastic A & B road weapon. Ended up selling that to Prodrive in Banbury as it was immaculate and they wanted it for their museum.

Never too old to drive the car of your choice imho.

66, last hatch was a Lotus Sunbeam, I still race my Sylva, currently I have 3 7 type track cars, a mint Z3, a Lotus Carlton and a Hilux to tow the 7s. Daily transport and commute to work is a Vulcan 900. currently restoring an Elan and looking forward to drive that. Your never to old for a 7.
