Maybe I'm a bit of a weird one, but as much as I like my Subaru Outback with it's comfy ride and heated leather seats, I really miss my crappy old K11 Micra. It cost me £250, I didn't care about it getting dinged or driving on fun tracks that would scuff the paint. If anything went wrong, I could fix it for less than £50 in my driveway, and I sold it for more than I paid for it.

I'm seriously considering buying a 106 1.5d just to have another car like this. 60MPG, £300 and a whole lot of fun, even if a 100 mile journey leaves you destroyed. Apparently you can also use veg oil, which could be an interesting experiment.

It's a weird one because I feel like I got rid of my Micra because I felt I should, not because I didn't like it. I always just saw it as a temporary cheap shed to tide me over. Maybe I should care a bit less about what other people think.

Yeah I'll give you the point about AC...

The 106 I saw today looked okay, until I poked a huge hole into the bodywork underneath the battery. Going to look at another, much nicer looking one tomorrow. Full years MOT, 90k and no advisories for 3 years!! Hopefully not to good to be true.

Fingers crossed for at least a year of slow lane, 70mpg, none turbocharged diesel motoring.

It was a wreck when I scrapped it but amazingly MOT check shows it's still on the road?!
My first car was a 1.6 Golf with 140k that I bought sight unseen on eBay for £400. I scrapped it 3 years ago due a misfire that was apparently a monumental failure of the ECU, but it's still MOT'd and running to this day! Amazingly, we also checked my father in law's first car, a 60's Morris Minor. It has changed colour, but still runs to this day!

Same story with a Citroen Nemo I bought with 230k. I don't know why I got rid of it tbh, ran absolutely fine. It was only four years old, apparently it had driven from Darlington to Carlisle twice every day of it's life, well over 50k a year eek

My last banger was a K11 Micra, listed for £300, I purchased for £240 (they advertised it with 6 months tax, but new tax law had just come in). It was pretty rough. Bodywork was tatty, laquer peeling, covered in scratches and had an intermittent misfire. A day of polishing and waxing, a set of part worns, a new set of spark plugs and a year of trouble free motoring later, I sold it for £500.

The thing about bangernomics is that it makes you really appreciate a normal car. I can drive the Daihatsu for a week and revel in low cost motoring, the comedy fall over effect in corners, the skinny 155 section tyres squealing, the less than resolved ride, the umpteen creaks rattles and noises. Then when I get into the Clubman or 520, the handling, the power, the smoothness is just so amazing!
Absolutely. My 165HP wallowy Subaru felt like a supercar after a year in a Micra... Except for the seats. Bangers always have good seats, or Subaru's are just bad.

After the K11 Micra search, the 106 search was fairly painless. I reckon I saw no less than 10 completely rotten Micra's. I got lucky on the second 106, although there aren't very many knocking about with the diesel engine.

What's the secret to me being able to enjoy bangernomics?

I need to be frugal for a while as I have other financial priorities. Could do with selling current daily driver for about 3k, paying a 2k bill and finding something reliable with the change to do while I save up some money.

The problem is I know if it's too slow I'll get fed up rather quickly of being wasted by 118d's all the time.

GS300? Reliable, comfortable, apparently. And quick. Auto would be nice too!

Any other decent suggestions that won't be rattly, slow and knackered at shed budget?

As much as I'd love to have a go in true shed spirit and buy anything cheap and roadworthy and run it in to the ground, I think I need to be a bit more selective with the choice to stop myself from changing it too quick & losing money.
IMO bangernomics and relatively quick don't go together. Doesn't matter if the car cost £200 if it does 25MPG and has expensive parts. I find the best thing is to get a car so catastrophically slow that you just don't care about 118d's. The new game becomes hypermiling, which I at least find quite fun.

If I drive for 60 miles at 75MPH, it takes me 48 minutes to reach my destination (based on no traffic). If I drive at 60, it takes me an hour. Doesn't really bother me taking ten minutes longer on the commute to save more than half of my car costs compared to my Subaru. On the twisty roads, if you're in a light hatchback it's fun to drive while trying to keep your momentum. I have no trouble keeping up with the luxury barges on the tight Northumbrian roads around here.

580 miles on 39 litres of diesel for my first tank with the 106. Think that works out about 65MPG! Not a careful tank either, finding the limits and whatnot with it being new to me.

The leased German diesel brigade does get on my nerves in a small hatch. In my Subaru Outback doing 60 along the A69, no problems. Safe gap, and for the most part they would only overtake when it was safe to do so.

106, same speed, same road, either the 106 has a very good mirror or they're so far up my arse I can make out the colour of their eyes, before shooting past narrowly avoiding an oncoming HGV. I try to just ignore it, takes some getting used to though.

When the exhaust fell of my Outback, it cost £120 and a £50 weld job as it used standard flanges. Took 3 days in total from falling off to being fixed.

When the exhaust just fell of my 106, it cost me £15 and a £2 for a new clamp. Took 30 minutes. 20 to pick the parts up, 10 to fit the new part in torrential rain.

It is nice not to have to worry about these things.

I do a curious mix of bangernomics and shedding.

The 205 diesel I have just bought is definitely a Bangernomics special - it's currently running on 40% wvo despite being fitted with a Lucas Fuel pump.

At the same time I have an old Citroen CX bought for banger money that came with a load of spare panels- it is definitely a barge (and needs work!)

I like owning stuff outright and not having to worry about leaving it anywhere - my e30 320i touring is a prime example of that, having taken me to Odessa and back in 2 weeks, plus Prague and back in 8 days. You can abandon it anywhere.
Is it the CX that has the air suspension? I remember my grandparents owning an old Citroen with it.

I'll ask next time I see him, I remember it being a different colour to when he owned it.
