Hello all.

I'm currently in Dover, about to get on a ferry. With me I've got an e46 330I cab, a mountain bike,a snowboard, a pair of swimming trunks, an inflatable boat that may or may not hold my weight and a camera.

The only place I've planned to go so far is my grandparents house in Hannover, Germany.

Ideas on a postcard? Obviously I'm thinking the alps, but I've not decided which particular Alp I'd like to visit..

Nurburgring is a potential shout. See if my 93 year old grandad will come along!

Need a beach along the way too.

Awesome thanks. What's the ring like on a saturday? If I go on a weekend my cousin can come.

I'm going to post pictures until I get back. It'll break the monotone of what car threads!

Bloody hell.
That is one hell of a roadtrip. Murmansk?!

The highlight of the drive to my grandparents was wondering why the steering wheel was vibrating so much and looking at the speedo.
140 mp cool

Then the obvious happened and I got flashed by a porsche I was holding up..

So looking at all the places you guys gave suggested, along with a call from a friend in rome, I came to the conclusion that im probably looking at 4000 kilometres in the next couple of weeks.
Rather guiltily I checked the oil and with all the will in the world I couldn't pretend it looked particularly fresh. The car's service history ran out 20k ago so there's a chance it's not been done since then.

And my grandads garage has a service pit...
Off we went to the kraut equivalent of halfords and came away with all the necessary filters and oils.

When I was a little kid the old boy used to make things with me in the workshop. Everything from model boats to electric circuits with motors and bulbs. Absolutely fantastic to get back in the workshop and work at something, especially as he's now in his 90s!
Forgive the vest, it's bloody warm and I'm young and misguided.

Look at the state of this filter. Absolutely horrendous.

Last time I did any vehicle maintenance was on a tank. Cars are much more pleasant to work on, even if the filter is stuck and the washer bottle has split!

Spent four hours in the car with a mate today. Drove to "winterberg", a ski and bike resort to do some downhill biking. He drove back which gave me a break because im driving through the night tonight to hopefully get to les deux alpes by 9am tomorrow, so I can get on the glacier!

He loved the car and hit 130mph, not bad!

Don't ask how I got it to fit.

I've driven about 8 hours already today.

The thermostat piled in completely about an hour ago. Car now running a bit cool.

I've also piled in and need a break laugh

4000 miles? Sodding hell, long way!

Loving the responses on this. It would seem that my old bimmer is downright modern compared to some of the cars PHers have taken around the continent!

I had a 4 hour nap. Can't recommend it as a good nap length. It's neither here nor there.

Just crossed into Switzerland where a plump lady made me pay 40 euros.
And gave me this as change:

What the bloody hell am I going to do with that. Play monopoly?!

Next year we are going to leave the kids and go on our own little Euro trip most likely in the GT-Four.

I doubt you will go that far east to Poland but they have some fantastic lakes and fantastic forests for biking. I would highly recommend doing the whole WW2 tour thing in France/Belgium. Did it many moons ago while at school and was a fantastic experience.

Is that it in the garage? That requires more pictures..

I would do the WW2 thing but I go on such trips with work as it is, so no real requirement to go off by myself. I would however like to see where my grandad was based in norway. His pictures are stunning.

Didn't die.

Ten points to the person that recognizes this monster. Just about keeping uo with it just so I could hear the howl in the tunnels both cars made was spectacular.

So I made it to the alps and the next day picked up my friend from the airport in grenoble. We met in army training and get on like a drunk tank. Few days of skiing in the alps and we drove down to italy. Last night was a stop in lake como and today we drove to his house in rome.

The car...
Well the fuel guage has piled in. Ha.

Avoided the earthquake. Was actually on the list of places so thats out now. We were considering going to help but realistically came to the conclusion as they probably didn't need us, it would have been schaden tourism and unnecessary.

Italian roads are interesting. Very interesting.
Pretty sure I have a cracked rim, as I have a slow puncture.

So we are leaving rome and headed to cannes. Rome was awesome, driving through tunnels and Roman arches was surreal.

Met a couple of lovely American ladies and spent the three days driving around rome with some fair company. I've now got an invitation to indiana now, which I'll certainly take up.

Last night finished with a rather surreal beach party so im currently nursing a headache whilst my mate drives.

Anyone got any recommendations for cannes?

I'll get round to replying to all of your comments in goid time, sorry if it looks like im being rude and ignoring. I'm in cannes now, in an apartment above a supercar dealership! Pics to follow.

However! We had a blowout today! I've got four brand new tyres on the car on freshly reconditioned alloys so wasn't expecting troubles, but one has a slow puncture and one completely ate itself. Luckily I was only doing 50 but it still caused the traction control to kick in. Bit faster round a corner on some of the sketchy roads around here and I could have crashed.

Cooper tyres. At 120 for rears I assumed they'd be fine. Wasn't expecting performance but certainly wasn't expecting death.

To add to that last comment..
Luckily I had a full size spare, not normally a thing on these cars. Lugging a front mv1 wheel around turned out to be a very good call. Poor car is now running around on mismatched colour wheels and one wrong size on the rear but a can of tyre seal would have been completely useless
