RM Sotheby's London auction

From F40 to FJ40, tonight promises to be another great RM auction - here's what to look forward to

Now we're used to reporting on RM Auctions' sales from all over the world, but tonight it's ever so slightly different. Tonight RM's sale is from Battersea Park, the yearly London sale and one of its most prestigious auctions.

Cooler than a Land Rover

Unsurprisingly the catalogue is full of incredible cars, worth many millions of pounds. We'll deal with those in due course, but how about an oddball to kick off?

Like an Alfa Romeo 1900 M 'Matta' for example. A what? This is Italy's Willys Jeep, built in the early 50s as a reconnaissance car for the Italian military. Just 2,050 were made, with this car even being Millie Miglia eligible. Well if you want something different... Its estimate is £28-£32,000.

For a more conventional motorsport hit, the auction offers a wealth of choice. BMW E28 M5 Superproduction perhaps? With that legendary straight-six dry-sumped and producing more than 460hp, it should to be a spectacular classic touring car. And what a livery too. For a more up-to-date tin top, there's also an A4 Super Tourer or Jason Plato's old Laguna. Surely you need both, right?

Homologation specials are covered too, with both an Audi Sport Quattro and a Ford RS200 available. There's a Stratos as well...

To the more conventional exotica. There's an F40 and an Enzo going under the hammer, plus a stunning Riviera Blue Porsche 911 GT2. Britain is well represented too, with this DB4 GT estimated at £2.2-£2.5m and this DB4 convertible set to make a million pounds. And would you just look at this Diablo?!

Some very cool cars in there.

The appeal of owning a 1990s touring car is lost on me, even though I enjoyed watching that era of BTCC on the telly. £80-120k for Plato's Laguna? Not particularly old or pretty to look at. What can you do with it - race it and risk smashing it up?
