GMC Sierra HD All Terrain X

Well why just have a V8 petrol when you could have a 6.6-litre, 910lb ft diesel?

Never let it be said that America can't do an imposing pick-up. Even by the standards of the genre, this GMC Sierra 2500HD All Terrain X (to give it its full name) is fantastically OTT. Huge size, huge power, huge presence.

It's in fact the third GMC in the All Terrain X series, suggesting ultimate off-road trucks are proving popular. This Sierra is notable for its sheer size - it looks massive even parked with other pick-ups - but also its new engine. Thought the 435hp of the Audi SQ7 was impressive? Think again. This GMC packs another, er, 10hp. But we all know torque is far more important where diesels are concerned, for dieselly stuff like towing and pulling and lugging trees around. Here the GMC trounces the Audi with 910lb ft of torque against 664lb ft. Unsurprisingly GMC says the 6.6-litre V8 diesel is the most powerful in its class. Transmission testing must have been fun with that.

Now, if you have a truck with twice the torque of an M4 GTS, you're going to want people to know about it. So the All Terrain X gets Goodyear Duratrac off-road tyres with 18-inch wheels, four-inch side steps, a bed-mounted bar (if you want to fit off-road lights, obviously) and one sod-off great exhaust. No mention of any official 'rolling coal' mods or vertical stacks but doubtless the aftermarket will be there if that's your bag. There are a lot of black body accents though, but best spec the other available colour (Summit White) if you want to see those. The standard Z71 off-road package should mean the looks can be matched with ability too.

The Sierra All Terrain X has been launched in Texas, which makes it hard to think of a more perfect vehicle to location launch arrangement. Prices have not been confirmed just yet, but it's probably one to add to the test-drive list for those after the ultimate do-it-all truck.

If your Waitrose is anything like mine then you'll have parking wardens. They'll have a breakdown when you rock up in that and take up 4 spaces!
