Sound when starting an automatic car

Hi,
My first post so go easy....
I was thinking today that there is often a very distinctive sound when starting some automatic cars. I'm talking about the torque converter type rather than automated-manual.
Its hard to describe, its a kind of metalic grinding sound. I'm pretty sure its not a problem as I've heard it on many autos over the years even some fairly new ones.
Do you know what I mean? What is the noise caused by? Or am I just dreaming????
