That's not how it typically works. From the MO this is organised crime. They know the police and forensics will have been around, advised on security precautions and locks beefed up accordingly. These guys want in and out, they don't want to be caught and linked to 50 other thefts. They rarely come back in these cases - it's on to the next house.

It has happened to a few people near me. They even left wallets, handbags, mac books etc that were next to the keys - just wanted the car
Exactly. They could have taken phones, laptops, etc but they were just after the cars. We did hear them thanks to yappy dog however they drove off as we got up. Police had the Golf within 30 minutes of it being taken.

Been in the house 18 years always had nice cars and this is the first incident of any note. Police did say it is likely to be a local gang based on where they retrieved the Golf and they are doing up to 30 cars a month.

Utterly pointless I'm afraid...

"Give us the key to the post, or we'll smash your fking head in."

I'd rather the ne'er-do-wells just take the car and kill themselves with it.
No use to me unfortunately as cars are parked outside the house on a lane

Was anybody arrested in the golf? Please say they were.

Was there any damage to it? Please say there wasn't.
Nobody arrested they fled into a house but chopper didnt get exact address, both front alloys and tyres gone, may need repair to inside of front wing where tyre has hit it.

They drove for a couple of miles after tyres went so could be further unseen damage

Police reckon that is the route for many stolen vehicles, strip and sell parts. I presumed stolen to order but apparently not the norm

Anyway insurance moving fast on the Golf, released by CSI and on its way to the repairer

Sorry to hear this burty, hopefully it won't be too much hassle going forward.

Do you have the place belled up? You said the dog yapping alerted you so no alarm going off? Do you have an alarm box on the wall and they just ignored it?

Sorry for so many Q's, just trying to get an angle on their thought processes.
Thanks, there is a sensor on the doors but it didn't go off

All the locks were upgraded yesterday and I have someone coming today to look at better options for cctv and alarm, thinking of a monitor alert system as we are at the end of a quiet lane and its pitch black at night so no reason for anyone to be around unless they are up to no good

Thankfully both cars are leased with Gap insurance otherwise it would have been even more costly

Just up the road in Blackburn so will keep eyes out.

Can you say where the Golf was found?
Yes in Harwood after being stinged in Read!, police are saying there is a major gang based in Harwood / Rishton with links to Manchester and they have been very active for 9 months now

Anti bump locks with cylinders that are difficult to drill and pick. Most multipoint locks are weak due to the key cylinder and/or handle. don't assume that just because you have a multipoint lock on your door that it is actually very good. Upgrade the cylinder.

Cars stolen by gangs are generally not stolen to a specific order - the gangs know the desirable cars and what they will get for them and steal to break or export. Some high performance cars will also be used for other crime. I think you have painted a view of how things were 10-15 years ago.

CCTV is generally pointless - all you get is the video of the person breaking in to your house. It might deter opportunists, but not criminal gangs.
Yes this is the type of lock upgraded to and investment is going to be in the alarm system rather than improved CCTV.

However will need one new camera as the Bas@@@s took one with them!!

Hi OP, sorry to hear about these thefts. I had my Golf R taken in a broad daylight, carjacked off the in-laws driveway. It is just the inconvenience and potential emotional stuff you have to deal with afterwards.. Mine was leased and I had GAP, however didn't really help me much, given it was quite a new agreement..

Hope it is found and you get over it..

Cheers, same here, Golf 3 months old, Touareg 4

Golf is recovered and in repair shop, Touareg not been found

Does this Hollywood film you have scripted also have a Michael Bey explosion in the background? laugh

I reckon Tom Cruise would be good at playing the Golf R owner.
That made me smile, think Tom is a little short for me!

Anyway Touareg was spotted by member of public on Tues. Guy turned up in taxi and drove it away. Only 3 miles away, sounds like parked up to see if it had tracker, nothing since

Quick question OP considering you are one of the few who have been through the experience, and not a mate of a mate who once heard something about someone.

- Would you do anything differently next time considering the "PH Massive's" advice about keys upstairs, cheese knives and plant pots?

Or are you

- Grateful that your family are safe and the insurance process hasn't been too arduous...
Hi Swampy. In answer to your questions. Keys will be less accessible i.e. not in view but not upstairs, I don't want to be engaging with some low life/lives whilst my family are in bed.

Actions taken are locks and door handles beefed up, increased security from alarm system, CCTV and security lights relocated higher up the walls. Internal camera at the weakest point of the house.

We are semi rural with dry stone walls so very difficult to restrict access to the garden area without removing everything and fencing us in, let alone the aesthetic effect on the property

Police reckon it is unusual for a property to be targeted twice although not unheard of. I just need to make it as difficult as possible for them to get in. I know some may view it as the wrong option ( as in they have won ) but I will be thinking more carefully about choice of cars given our location and proximity to East Lancs criminal gangs

Sorry to hear about this OP. Sounds like it ended well from a financial point, but it's the emotional/personal side of it that matters most. I've heard of a few Golf R's going missing, shared via friends on Facebook.

Mine arrives next month and for the first time in years I'm thinking about not using my driveway and parking outside on the street a few doors down.
Hi thanks however this will not end well financially

To date excess on insurance x 2 = £1060
Locksmith and new door handles = £300
Replacement CCTV camera = £100
Lost deposit and admin fees on 4 month old Touareg ( didn't cover it in the Gap policy ) = £3000
New deposit on replacement vehicle = £1000 minimum
Up spec alarm system = £400

I could go on but you get the point. I am just thankful that the cars were leased as wouldn't want to be selling stolen / recovered / repaired cars in 2 years

Where the hell are these cars going? Surely this has gone past them being stolen to commit over crimes in / joyride now, they must be getting sold on somewhere as cars just dont break up for profit like the used to.
Police reckon they are all being stripped and sold for parts

Apparently £50k car = £8k in parts

If they were doing more than a car a week (which they would need to if they are a gang and want to make enough money for it to be worthwhile) thats a lot of stuff to strip / sell / hide without being caught.

My money is on them being stuffed in a container and sent elsewhere.
Please said they been doing 30 cars a month for 9 months

Had a security guy round today to do some work on the alarm and he gave us a great tip, it won't work for everyone but is so simple and inexpensive I thought it worth sharing;

Our house is an old cottage and has two rooms leading to the staircase, the only route upstairs from the ground floor.

Both doors are substantial solid oak and open towards the stairs. Simply install a thumbturn type lock on each door, think hotel door / bathroom type lock, that can only be opened from one side. When going to bed with the house alarmed simply turn the keys making the 1st floor very difficult to access,

Whilst this is not impenetrable it would take some time and significant effort to get through it, whilst the alarm is piercing their ears and I am calling the police.

Keep the car keys on the 1st floor just in case, and we sleep on the second.

We have listened to all of the tips and recommendations from the police, this thread, security experts etc. and have taken many on.We will be installing these locks within days at a cost of £20. Least cost of everything we have done but this makes us feel much safer.

I think people are getting a bit OTT - the real criminals don't even break into your house to get your car, they just take the car through re-programming via the OBD port. Hence in reality anyone who breaks into your home will be a common thug - not the Russian mafia.
Hmmm not my experience given that they clearly staked our house out beforehand and then systematically took out the security lighting and CCTV - common thugs?
