Should I accept damage to new car
Discussion
The photo below is the front face of the rear wheel trim. The black plastic (lowest 6-7 cm) is marred badly by road grime, sand, stones being flicked up. You can literally see the dirt line running along the lower white sills. The 'damage' to the black trim is 100% the same on both sides of the car. The car is 5 months old. Dealer suggesting i pay for new trim. I say it's a design fault and that the trim should be more recessed to avoid being a stone trap.

Very common to see, front wheels throw up road debris & it hits somewhere along the side of the car & the reason why Audi & others have the stick-on clear plastic shields in areas of high stone impact.
The early Ford Kas had major problems with it hitting the front of the quarter panel immediately to the bottom rear of the door aperture stripping the paint off & rusting setting in. Later ones had a small plastic shield which stopped the damage.
Thanks for your comments. When you say stick on shields, do you mean, standard fit. What did Ford do about the Ka, say tough st? I think it should have shields as factory fit.The early Ford Kas had major problems with it hitting the front of the quarter panel immediately to the bottom rear of the door aperture stripping the paint off & rusting setting in. ok so lets say its a design fault.
what do you want out of this exactly?
Redesign the rear trim for you?
put on a new one every 6k miles?
Did you not view ANY other cars of the same type on autotrader, in the show room or real life, surely there is one out there that has more than 6k miles on it, did you check if they have the same issue?
if it upsets you so much, change the car
Its a new model. NO i don't want it redesigned. I want the plastic replaced and a shield attached FOCwhat do you want out of this exactly?

Sorry if I'm missing something, but would it not be easier to buy some 3M 'helicopter' tape and apply it yourself?
This sort of thing

Mountain bikers use it on the down tube to stop the frame getting chipped by stones from the front wheel

So you placed your order before having the chance to see the product in the flesh? Some teething issues are to be expected, then.

So, yes, you DO want it redesigned.DSGbangs said:

Eh! You want a plastic trim replacing with a new plastic trim but with an additional plastic trim fitted to it to protect the new plastic trim but accepting that the plastic trim which has been added to the plastic trim will get damaged in the same way that the original plastic trim did..... can you see where the problem is with your request, or will you later ask for the plastic protection trim to be replaced FOC, or a further plastic trim to be added to protect the plastic protection trim....VW may very well sort it out. They say they will see if they can clean it off. When they can't.......
some want to know now. See Andy's post above. It's common enough.
An excerpt from an email from the dealer "a very hostile environment possible affected by stone’s & road debris flicked up by the wheels, although it should be able to cope with this"
In short the car is going in and will be repaired FOC. I could care less what anyone thinks. The dealer agrees with me so that is all that matters.

When it's the same again in another 6k miles, what are you going to do then?An excerpt from an email from the dealer "a very hostile environment possible affected by stone’s & road debris flicked up by the wheels, although it should be able to cope with this"

Wow this thread is full of sanctimonious pricks isn't it? Jesus effin Christ!
I'm with the OP to be fair, for the plastic to be scuffed in that short of time frame then I'd be annoyed too. They should have made it out of tougher material if it's in the firing line - I don't have damage to these parts on either of our cars.
This forum seriously is the pits nowadays
Precisely what the dealer admitted 'should have been able to cope'. Many thanks Mr Egg I'm with the OP to be fair, for the plastic to be scuffed in that short of time frame then I'd be annoyed too.
