How non-PHers buy and sell cars
Discussion
Interesting situation at work. Colleague isn't into cars. It's "transport" to him which is fine. He has a 59 plate Nissan Qasqai/Cashcow diesel, low mileage of around 50k, very clean, but currently faulty. Garage have hinted at the common rail diesel injector and £600 parts and a couple of hours labour so you're looking at say £850 with Mr VAT included.
My colleagues immediate reaction is to weigh the car in as scrap and buy a new/replacement car because "it's 7 years old."
Plugging his numberplate and mileage into Autotrader gives a value of around £4k. So I'm trying to convince him that for less than a grand he could still have something worth £4k (or £3k net) but he isn't having any of it!

I'm trying to convince an intelligent man who has no car sense. He'll be signing up to GAP/Tyre Insurance/Dent Insurance/PaintGlazeShieldbks but he'll be happy about doing so. I think when I talk car to him he glazes over as though a mathematician would explain advanced algebra to him. I've tried to be simple and even written down the calcs: a) car worth £4k, fixed for £1k, sold for 4k = £3k in pocket and b) car worth £4k, sold for £150 scrap = net loss of £3850.
His wife thinks like him too and I think the lure of a shiny new car is too great.

No over dramatisation. The car is now a non-runner so it can't be part-exed or WBACed
There's a few people like that in our office - the girl who has a Ford Fiesta who suffered a broken rear bumper in a non-fault rear end shunt. Rather then let the local Ford dealer repair it she took it back to the supplying dealer in Halifax, where her parents live, to have it repaired, because she was adamant the supplying dealer was the best and to maintain her warranty.
