About 650 cars auctioned at Manheim Colchester today. Where the Fleet Managers were present, a lot of cars were being sold at less than reserve.

Included today, was Manheim's quarterly Prestige sale; about 60 cars today. Given the many threads observing and speculating on the market for premium cars, I thought I'd grab some 'live' data for you all. Have listed some of the better cars below together with pics if I managed to take one. (Just phone pics and in poor light, so not great quality, sorry)

Quite a few of the cars prices are marked 'provisional'. A lot of these occured as the vendor had requested the auctioneer to submit the highest bid to them rather than leave a reserve. Also, there's a buyer's premium on top of each successful bid price. If you want any more info on any of the cars, do ask.

Across the entire auction - prestige and regular - the model which 'stuck out' as having very solid demand, is the Range Rover - both full-size and Sport variants. Almost all of them easily hitting reserves.

Anyway, here's some of the highlights:

2007 07 BMW 750i £17,950 provisional

2006 55 Porsche Cayman 3.4S £21,900 SOLD

2007 07 Porsche Cayman 3.4S Tiptronic £24,000 provisional

2007 57 BMW M3 Coupe 13k £32,000 provisional

2003 03 Aston Martin Vanquish V12 460bhp coupe £45,500 SOLD

1999 Ferrari 550 Maranello 485bhp coupe £30,500 provisional

2004 53 Aston Martin Vanquish V12 £47,000 provisional

2007 07 Aston Martin Vantage Sportshift Roadster £53,000 SOLD

2005 55 Porsche 911 (997) S Tiptronic 355bhp coupe £30,600 provisional

2008 08 Porsche 911 (997) Turbo Cabriolet 480bhp £74,500 SOLD

2006 06 Maserati Quattroporte V8 Duoselect 400bhp £31,000 provisional

2005 05 Ferrari 360M Spider £55,250 SOLD

2007 57 Rolls Royce Phantom 453bhp Convertible £186,000 provisional

2005 05 Lamborghini Gallardo 500bhp coupe £62,750 provisional

2006 06 Mercedes CLK 63 Tip Auto Cabriolet £30,000 SOLD

2007 56 Bentley Continental Flying Spur W12 560bhp £53,250 SOLD

2007 57 Audi R8 R Tronic £65,500 SOLD

2007 07 Jaguar XK 4.2V8 Convertible £32,750 provisional

The star of the show (kind of confused)

1999 Ferrari F355 Spider (this car was entered by Essex Police. It's LHD, and has been recorded on the VCAR register TWICE in its life; both times as a CAT C total loss!) Went for £25,100!

Others (sorry no pics)

2007 07 BMW 330D M Sport Convertible £27,500 provisional

2006 Dodge Crew Cab Pick-up SRT-10 8.3 V10 500bhp £16,600 SOLD

Excuse my lack of knowledge.

How does a phantom Drophead end up at a Maheim auction?
Why wouldn't it? The Colchester site is the biggest car auction in Europe. Each quarter they hold a prestige sale. It's a prestige car. People rarely buy cars like that; they lease them through a fianance company like Lombard or similar. The finance houses then clear their stock through auction houses.

I am sure that there are some bargains to be had at auction, but as tonker et al have highlighted before, add in the buyers premium, add in the service that may be needed, the tyres etc, and then factor in you have no warranty and the convenience of dropping it back off at the dealer to fix that broken electric window etc.
Why would a less than 3 year old, UK dealer supplied car not have a warranty - regardless of if it has been sold through an auction?
Cars all retain their manufacturer's warranty, irrelevant of number of times sold or method of sale.

It was awesome; kicking myself for not getting a photo. It was immense - wide, high and so, so long. Lovely metallic dark red/burgundy. Perfect mid-life crisis car biggrin

Bloody hell. yikes
+1

In fact, need to say it again....

BLOODY HELL!

And they say M3's are in demand and hence have a reputation for holding their value. The fact that it was only months ago that they were a premium. How quickly things change!
That one was well short of its reserve IIRC; it wasn't one of the 'submit highest bid' cars.
BUT, the auction was very well attended, so the highest bid does show the trade's appetite for the model.

A few bargains there, but didn't really think the 355 was one of them.
That car was an absolute bucket. Sounded rough as hell, oil pressure very low, as already mentioned written off twice, Police sale, left hand drive. Yet despite all that two blokes lost leave of their senses and got in a bidding war over it. As the bidding got higher they kept making huge increases in their bids to try and put the other bloke off. It was painful to watch.
You should have said 'hello' WC! smile

If I were buying for the future it would have to be that Vanquish. I don't reckon that car would cost you much in depreciation over the next 10 years if loved.
All the Astons struck me as good value. That Vantage convertible was quite nice looking with the burgundy roof and interior.

The car I wanted (and which was incredible value) was the W12 Flying Spur. The interior was just awesome!

Some of the prices don't look too bad, but some don't look great either??!?!?

What is the sales tax/VAT added on to the prices?
No tax or VAT. They have a table of charges for the Buyer's Premium/Financial Indemnity - not a very scientific scale, but if you add 6% (as a private buyer) you probably won't be far off. Trade account holders pay less than half of that.

It's not 6%, more like 3% + VAT without an account.
I beg to differ. Have been buying cars there for the last 23 years. Admittedly I don't tend to buy cars at these price points, but on cars between five and fifteen thousand I'd say that 6% (gross) as a 'figure in your head' for an occasional buyer is not far wrong.

Just checked: Have bought three cars this year and have paid 5.1%, 5.3% and 4.6% on them.

I also 'assume' that it'll cost an extra £250 to 'put something right' post-auction. Sometimes I'm lucky and I get away with having to spend nothing. Have also hit figures to get a car roadworthy though!

You are paying too much, I have an account wink
The form is sitting just to my left. Every now and then I think I'll apply, but it's never 'the right time'. Some years I'll buy nothing, others I'll be into double figures. Should be fun down there come January/February; I'm anticipating some serious post-Christmas blues across the trade.

With premium, service and a couple of little jobs I'd expect to have to drop another 5k on it.

Still value in it.
Or you can save on the 'surprises' old cars at auction often bring and just buy this

Great report i was in colchester last week and bought a few cars from east coust salvage at marks tey. Just a bit down market from those cars lol.
I've never understood how they sell anything at ECS. Their cars are always dogs and the prices are more than main dealers. Given the way they advertise I'd expect them to charge little more than auction prices.

I daresay you got a nice discount for multiple purchases!

I bought the car (provisional was accepted). It was on 'pikey' NI plates as it was originally registered there, and only moved over to essex a couple of years ago. The seller was also the seller of the Rolls Silver Cloud. If you'd looked closer into the service history - cambelts were done 2 years ago - Full ferrari service history bar the last year, plus a years MOT. Drove it from essex to edinburgh last night at good pace - car seems mechanically very solid, and I'm happy with it. A grand spent on various bits and pieces and it will be in good shape - although I do hate the plate. Anyone got an 'S50 XXX' plate they want rid of?

Good idea.

Soovy could sell his 996 as lot number one then spend the rest of the day finding something to buy. Hmmm, we could sell tickets....
I've put a note in my diary for a week before the next prestige sale; I'll post a reminder then and if anyone's interested we can have a Pistonheads huddle round a few strong teas smile
