Auction Report #3: Manheim Colchester 20 Nov 08
Discussion
Another day, another report. About 450 cars today.
A fair crowd today but no-one willing to spend any money; if 10% of the cars met their reserve and sold outright I'd be surprised.
On some of the cars, by the value of the highest bid, I have noted 'No interest'. This means that either no-one would make the minimum bid or only one person made that bid.
You can read into this in one of two ways:
- If you own a car like that, you can take it as a message of how interested the trade would currenly be of your car if you presented it to them as a p/ex.
- If you fancy a car like that and are happy to buy at auction, you will easily topple any trade bids and still buy yourself a cheap car.
Anyway, here's some info and a few piccies to peer at. As before, please be aware that they are taken on a mobile phone and in very odd lighting conditions; so the cars are ofen much prettier in 'real life'. I seem to have had wobbly hands today too!
Provisional bids are usually within £150-£200 of the reserve. SOmetimes the vendor will come down to the bid price; more likely at the moment with so few vehicles selling!
First off; one for the cartographers amongst you

Doesn't give the mileage but if it's sensible that Lexus IS220 is a lot of 2006 car for 7 grand....
Sorry. It was 75k. (but very smart and straight)I expected that little Z3 to make about £2,500. Was surprised that it went up as far as £4k and even more shocked when the auctioneer announced that it was still so far away from reserve he was marking it unsold.

V8,
Can you run through what happened on the 350z and 03 XKR? I take it that the two prices you gave weren't high enough rather than no interest at the opening price?
Cheers
XKR - One bid at £9,400. Too far away from reserve to warrant taking a deposit. Can you run through what happened on the 350z and 03 XKR? I take it that the two prices you gave weren't high enough rather than no interest at the opening price?

There were actually two 350Zs today.
The 07/07 shown above received one bid at £12,500. No further interest shown. Too far from reserve.
There was also this 2005 55 plate convertible one. One or two bids placed, peaking at £11,300 which, again, was well below reserve and the car went unsold. On reflection, there were a lot of convertibles on sale today: two 350Zs, two S2000s, a 630i, the MX-5..... and that's just what springs immediately to mind.
Anyway, here is the other car. I didn't post it initially as it was so similar (apart from age) to the other one)

Great informative posts.
In the current market, what would you expect a 2005 535d sport in a decent colour, with say 50K, to make?
Assuming you definitely mean 'Sport' rather than 'M Sport', probably around £13,500.In the current market, what would you expect a 2005 535d sport in a decent colour, with say 50K, to make?
One of the traders will give you the current book price shortly too, I'm sure

They book at £19k in the trade, still massively regarded so around £17-£18k I would think. Maybe a touch less with over average miles.

One model became the other as part of a styling refresh; so rather than them being one and the same, they are differentiated by model years. So whilst you won't find them both available on the same plate generally, e.g. 54 or 06, the questioner asked about 2005 and you will find both models on a 55 plate. And they do look quite different!

Thank you ! Informative and sobering. LS430 probably has at least another 200k miles in it ...I certainly couldn't live with one; no matter how luxurious the interior or how delightful the ride.

Just for the uneducated, a provisional sale is provisional based on...?
...the auctioneer's opinion that the highest bid is close enough to the reserve to warrant taking a deposit from the bidder and entering into a negotiation between vendor and bidder to try and seal a sale.Slaav said:

Thanks for your effort V8! I'm looking for a '55' or '06' 730d or CLS at the moment, and may come up to Colchester for the acution on next Thursday. Is there anywhere safe nearby, I could leave (a potentially untaxed) car for a while while I drive back home and pick the car up later that evening or the next day?
Cant you just leave it at the auction overnight and pick it up the next day for a small fee? There's a Mercedes Benz sale there on Thursday 27th Nov. MB clear there every other Thursday.
Not that many BMW's at Colchester. Mainly ex-fleet 3-Series entered by fleet/finance companies, but I think BCA have the BMW national account.
