Hello again.

This will be my last report of 2008; there is another auction next Tuesday, but that day I'll be polishing my shoes for the PH Xmas drinks at Dirty Dicks that evening. Maybe I'll see some of you there?

Was good to meet JazzyBee at the auction today. He remained a frustrated shopper when I left, but there were still plenty of cars to come; maybe he has some news for us?

Not a very exciting sales report otherwise this week, I'm afraid. Two large sales today: one from Mercedes Benz UK and the other from Chrysler/Jeep. Both over 200 cars each. As for general fleet stuff, it was a pretty poor show with many cars failing to meet reserves. I've included the pretty pics nonetheless.

As part of my continued attempt to make my reports appeal to both sexes (remember I included a 'blue car' in report #5), today I'm very pleased to be able to include a PINK one! JazzyBee was on his toes waving madly at the auctioneer as it entered the hall; if I hadn't dragged him back goodness only knows what damage may have occured to his happy family Christmas!

So here it is ladies.

I'll note the prices at the next MB sale after Christmas!

Excellent post as always V8Mate.

If it isnt too much trouble could you possibly give me some more info on the lexus/toyota auction in January? I'm probably looking in the wrong place but can't see much on the Manheim website.

Cheers
The auction is on Tuesday 13th January at 11am. (Cars will start being sold from 10am, but the Toyota/Lexus bit starts at 11am) I'd recommend getting there about 9 so that you can have a good long look round the vehicles. They do a cracking cooked brekkie too!

Catalogues are £3 from reception.

If you assume that you'll have to pay a 5% surcharge on any purchase, you won't be disappointed (i.e. it's actually a bit less than 5%, but doesn't follow a linear charging structure)

Hi V8, good work. I couldn't make today as I was in London with the Mrs. I had my eye on the SLK 55 but all those Slks have firmed up compared to what they were making 4-6 weeks ago.
No worries. Looks like January will have a couple of interesting sales.

I was VERY surprised at the prices the SLKs made (there were more than just those I posted). I kept thinking that people must be bidding on a completly different car or plate. Who would think that they'd demand such interest a week before the lousiest Christmas in years?

Were there any of the new Brabus Fourtwo, and if so what price did they make?
Two ForTwo Brabus cars sold - both on 55 plate.

Is it possible to get a list of all the cars that went through today, and the prices they made?

Thanks
Not to my knowledge. Hence my labour of love!

Are there many 159 2.4 JTDs going through at the moment? - specifically QTronic Sportwagons....
How many of that specific vehicle have Alfa sold?

How does that stack up as a percentage of all Alfas sold in the UK?

And how do Alfas appear as a percentage of all makes and models sold in the UK?

Because the auctions pretty accurately clear cars in proportion to those stats.

Come on Steve. Even the most ardent Alfa fan knows that the words 'Alfa' and 'investment' will never appear together.

The Cherokee for 4k eek

Were there any Jeep Patriots sent through?
I wasn't actually previously aware of the 'Renegade' trimmed Cherokee. Looked quite smart with the built in roof spots etc. A couple went through.

There were Patriots too; sorry I didn't get the prices. The auction hall had three of its 4 lanes running at the same time today, so there's no way I can get to everything.

The Chrysler/Jeep sales are always very good at Colchester though; well worth attending if you fancy one from their range. I'm patiently waiting for a Grand Cherokee SRT-8 to turn up smile

The reason I asked about the Patriots is that my wife recently bought a used Patriot CRD. I thought we got it for a good price but the auction prices would have been interesting to see, maybe...

Great reports though, keep up the good work cool
Assuming you bought an 07 or 57 recently, if you paid less than 50% of original retail you were at the right place.

Hello to everyone, new to the board.
Thanks for the posts.Very helpful as i am about to start trading from home and looking to use Manheim in the north west.
That's a brave move in the current climate. Certainly not a stupid move, as there are certainly deals to be done.

What provided the impetus for your decision? Have you been working in car sales and want to go independent?

What kind of cars do you plan on selling? How many cars can you stock at any one time?

Just dipping my toe in the collective water here (doesn't really bear thinking about) but given the interest in auctions etc, might a separate forum for auction related chat be a good idea? Rather than have the threads spread about, it would keep all the advice and reports together.
Probably better to post your suggestion in Website Feedback to get the right people to consider it.

This is something ive been thinking about doing for a while but im gonna wait to see what happens in the next few months. I did start 3 years ago only doing 1 but didnt have the time but now do.
Im currently saving for a car in the spring so have a bit of £ spare and might have a punt at one/a few.
If you are trading the right cars you can still make some £

A good way to start at the moment is the ford ka's/corsas/fiestas for a few grand keeping 1 car at a time.
I have decided to give it a go but only with two cars, possibly three.
This is part time as i have a factory job which gives me a wage.
I am hoping to buy cars in the 4 to 5k price range and maybe offer 90 day warranty with each sale.
Only maybe?

Ok, after just reading Manheims top 10 tips it looks like the way to do it is by making sure the car is assured - I cant see what there 15 mechanical check covers though, can anyone say? thanks in advance
Manheim Assured is a complete rip-off.

This is how it works:

1. The Vendor asks for the car they are entering to be given the Manheim Assured treatment.
2. The car goes through a basic PDI; e.g. tyre condition, windscreen chips etc.
3. The BUYER then has to pay the £25 (plus VAT) on top of the hammer price yikes
4. If there were any mistakes on the Manheim Assured report, there is no recourse available to the buyer.

So, effectively, the buyer is paying for a basic report into the car's condition which he didn't request (and which he could evaluate himself by walking round the car) and for which the report providers have no responsibility.

I bought a car which had a clean report, found several errors and omissions; wrote to Manheim and they weren't interested.

On the subject of rip-off practices, they are also running a great new scam on private (i.e. non-trade) buyers with regard to the V5. Essentially, private buyers canno take the V5 away when they buy a car. When paying for their purchase, the cashier asks you to complete the change of ownership section of the document there and then. And then Manheim posts the doc on to DVLA. A bit of a PITA, but here's the rub. They charge £21 plus VAT for this 'service'. Yep, £25 for YOU to fill out the V5 and for them just to pop it into an envelope.

Having said all of that, these little things are just sent to test us and it's still great lucrative fun buying your new pride and joy in the atmosphere of an auction hall.

V8 thanks again, what would be your advice with a car at auction that is a lot of money and has a lot of expensive things that are not covered by warranty and can only really tell once the car is being driven or being thoroughly checked by the manufacturer? Do you have 3 days to take it to a garage and have it really checked out?
Frankly, my advice would be that if you can't afford to take the risk of your purchase turning out to be a pig in a poke, then pop along to a dealer and buy one with a warranty.

That may sound harsh, but it is the only way, I'm afraid.

Its funny you say that as i was just about to add to my post saying that i would have thought the advice is do not buy that kind of car at auction!
wink

And, no, there is no time to review your purchase. You win the bidding; the car's yours!

There were a couple of older M classes that went through - do you know how much they went for, think one was an ML350, petrol, in silver.

Do the Manhiem average prices that are quoted on their web site mean anything, the car above was quoted around 7.5k.
I didn't grab prices for the older MLs this time.

If you take a look through some of my earlier reports you'll find some though.
