Hello all.

I'm looking at replacement cars, and wondering on what, if any are the risks of buying and running a high mileage 530d.

The mileage i'm talking about is between 100,000 and 140,000.

Thanks in advance,

David.

Sorry, the title should of course read 'High Mileage 5 Series'

It's the things like the turbos and suspension stuff that worries me at this mileage.

It should however have a fair amount of paperwork, so hopefully some of the scarier stuff has been replaced and is still in it's youth.

I need the car to last at least 4 years under my ownership, so it must last.

I thought these 'off the shelf' warranties weren't worth the paper they were written on?

It's a difficult one.

I'm not so bothered about he engine itself, i dare say these were built for high miles. But it's the Other bits, turbos, water and oil pumps, suspension, diffs, cluth etc. that i would be worried about.

Anyway, the wife seems to have her heart set on a 407. Anyone any experience of these?

And thanks to whoever changed the title!

Coley.

What mileage did you buy it at, and at what price if i can be so bold?

Also, have you replaced anything other than the 'givens' (tyres, brakes etc.)

Welsh - i have a figure of £4k in my head. Loads of 5's seem available for this price, but the wife doesn't like the idea of an auto. Women!

I think i would be continuously worried about something going wrong, i've had this feeling with a 200SX i had that was about to go pop at any time. so i dunno. Do i bow to pressure and put more money in the pot and get a 407?

Thanks, i guess i'm looking for what to look for whn buying a 5 series of this vintage bar the usual standard checks.

I'll go and browse the respective websites for the marque i'm looking at. I think i've managed to cut the 407 idea down in it's prime. Next it getting her to believe that autos are cool.

I probably do about 15-25k a year. Perhaps much less on that depending on the weather.

I dunno, i'm super paranoid about something going wrong and a big bill. I don't want to endure the 'I told you so' speech from the better half.

Thanks. Not really into the tourings as much.

How 'good' are the petrol version, probably 520, 523 etc at this mileage?

She is more concerned about the size of the car and auto box.

To me it seems like the best value for money barge available at the minute.

I just think that if i buy one of the other contenders (Mondeo, vectra et al) that i will get nowhere near the level of car ill get with the big 5.

Man, it shouldn't be this hard.

The best thing i can do is go out and get in some, and get the wife into some. i don't understnad why she is so scared of auto boxes, she said it will make us lazy.

As has probably been guessed, this will be used by the wife for the majority of the time, but i agree it's a great place to be when flouncing around on long trips.

I have a bike that i will use in the better days, so during this time she will use it almost entirely by herself.

RIGHT! The goalposts have changed.

I (the wife) has decided that we should up the budget. Maximum £6k.

And yes, i'm worried about something big going.
