It's fair to say that the unpredicatble snaking of various threads means that you never really know where to post some tasty bit of teutonic bargainsmithery but the clear waters of such duties are further muddied by increasingly common (but fully merited) suggestions of non-Prussian interloping and indeed, general statements of discovery, enthusiam, experience or revelation but which to the type of reasonably obsessive found habitually lurking in such corners of virtual turmoil, probably requires some 'catch all' thread into which they can pour their throughts and measure the veracity of their position by way of shared, billateral analysis with fellow desperados.

To wit, this - http://www.tomhartley.com/detail?template=/zoom/zo... - it suddenly dawned on me (although this thought must have been bubbling away since their appearance) that despite all the difficulties of this car's aesthetics, in GTS guise, the general gamut of colours produced for this edition of Cayenne and it's stance in general isn't that bad; indeed, from some quarters, I really rather like it.

There you go, random, pointless and not even controversial.

Off you go, this thread is nothing more than aimless channel surfing: it bugs swmbo but let's face it, it keeps you off the streets and is better than watching Britain's Got Rabies.

That's the one.

Or the Phaeton you uncovered earlier, Mikey - http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1071399.htm - presumably stellar odometrics but otherwise, tops, as Bez might say.

A very famous car, that one, Lee, in the circles of blown oink fettling... wink It is truly fearsome but in all the right ways...

Anyway, back to what amounts to motoring substance abuse..

Is it just me or do others share the feeling that once Aston sculpted the DB7 the bullseye had been bazookad and all that followed was merely angular revision?

I don't care about the XJ-S underpinnings, it is pure autonookie.

Regarding that dreadful antipodean affront to teutonic propriety...dear Lord.

Re the Cayenne GTS: having driven quite a few Mk1 Turbos (450s not 500s) and the n/a S cars (which I prefer) I can honestly say they are far sportier of set than even the mighty 4.8iS X5 (last gen, admittedly.)

I remain inclined to wager the credentials of the stirrable GTS render it a viable concept for those suitably rotund of gut.

Simes, when you're clear of things, let's get you up a notch or two on the scales and into something far less frenetic.

Here, we see Asboseipien deliverence - http://atsearch.autotrader.co.uk/www/cars_popup.js... - give up, the spirit of youth; embrace lard and let loose the Kraken of wanton torque.

Chaps, the B5/B6 s/c powerplants are/were all about truly humungous grunt.

In a blown Bentley, the vernacular oft described "stump pulling" characteristics. With Alpina, the torque levels were not dissimilar but the cars' portly credentials were far lower. Indeed, the B5's 1710 kilos compaerd to the current crop of performance uber saloon makes it almost featherweight by comparison!

Much excitement is greeting the new XF-R (and very nice it is, too) but that car hoves into action carrying a stash of Maccy D's equivalent to approx an additional 180 kgs over the old B5 - whilst the B5S has ever more grunt and power - and knowing how the earlier car's stats translated into eye widening forward motion, well... evil

At 4500 rpm in the B5 a small interruption to the HUD occurs during which a special mode selection is suggested to the driver: it is a mode called Kesselkreigenspurt...

It would learn the new upstart a teutonic thing or two.

The 928 does indeed appear on the steep side but it is not inconceivable that for such a late, incredibly low miled example, £25k may not be so crazed.

I would expect a similarly mint S4 to fetch high teens and please note the phrase, similarly mint.

You see, the problem with peoples' perceptions of the 928 is that they are all sub £10k but the truth is that whilst many do exist at or below such a level, the majority of these howl during the high points of the lunar season.

When you consider the glorious Daytona at £150k, also above and try to forget the tertiary qualities which engender it's perceived and therefore, actual worth, instead, considering raison d'etres, functional, operational and performance similarities (and superiorities [of the GTS]) then the cachet of that 'Rubenesque' classic (yes, I think such a term is pertinent) then for the odd fellow of the cognoscenti, possessing and splashing the requisite coin, is in this exceptional case, a perfectly cunning plan.

This belongs to PHer 900T-R. It makes me want to drive over Angela Merkel and growl, "you've been Chimera'd, love!"

Blessed be, it is a thing of supreme purity of form and sublime, automotive evocation.

Sticking with the 928 theme, i always liked them in Guards Red.

Is there another car that still looks great and contemporary today?

And of course uberschnelling is only a flex of the right boot away. biggrin
Exactly what I've been saying about the prices of these - that's actually great vfm.

My old S4 was this colour but the wheels, wing mirrors - and increased 5.4 litre engine - all bolstered the essentially classic profile.

I honestly don't think they'd feel that fast today, what with 250-300 bhp TDIs buzzing all over but even so, a timelessly stylish way of loping about.

A somewhat disjointed ensemble of wheels (optional across the Alpina range but standard issue B6 affairs) and spoilered appendages and yet, curiously right...

Every day, I regret my disposal of the same.

What a sensational all rounder. cloud9

You know, just as it is easy to fall under the spell cast by the sights and sounds of a Vulcan blasting orf to smite the commies, so it can be when land based leviathans whallop forth with similar, aggressive intent.

I was blissfully transfixed yesterday when at some juncture, the driver of one of these ('facelifted' hehe) Turbos came about, cleaving the air like some ruddy great axe of the Norse deities being thrown into battle, charging at a frankly hilarious lick down the o/s lane: I chunnered a firm mutter of profound approval - that people actually hate these things - what peasantry is abroad?

Quite brilliant.

Hello Greg san.

I seem to recall at one point it did a 180 and would bet the new S considerably gruntier than it's modest increases in power & grunt suggest... wink

Mikey, I'd cruise the streets of Burnley for a few weeks, raise the additional £6k and seek out a B5!
