On my way to the dentist this morning and the main roads are closed / blocked. I turn into Leicester road near hill lane in Southampton only to find a zero grip sheet ice with oil on it surface and a high curb which removed my front wheel. I want to rip the useless fking council a new ahole for failing to do anything grit wise on a road which has apparently seen 6 accidents in 2 days. I was literaly crawling around at 5 mph with a Car with awd and I couldn't do a fking thing to stop it. Good job there were no parked cars or people around and the slow speed means the damage isn't too bad. WTF DO WE PAY OUR fkING COUNCIL TAX FOR.

I'm used to driving in low grip conditions see my previous post on outdoor kart tracks on slicks. The bit of road I slipped on was beyond anything I've ever experienced. I've checked the car and it's not as bad as I thought the wheel has popped off of the wishbone at the bottom. I'm the first to take the piss when people drive like s on this condition. But I really could have done nothing to stop this as soon as I turned in. I know I was the one driving but I wouldve thought the council could have made more of an effort on a road which was reported as being particularly bad. It's not like it's a dead end or anything. I guess it's karma for my piss taking yesterday.

oh believe me I did. It didn't make a bean of difference. To add another irony to all this, the recovery truck just turned up and slid straight into the wall of the house I'm sitting outside.

I just got the assesment from the repairers. New wishbone new track rod new ball joint. Everything else is fine. They reckon I'm looking at 400 quid all in including recovery. I can live with that

You must have been the only one in this boat this morning my friend...temperatures below freezing outside and surprised when you encounter ice...
it was more the oil from an accident half an hour earlier I wasn't expecting and the fact I'd turned off from a treated road with at least a bit of grip that done me. It all turned out okay in the end and it could have been a lot worse.

Root cause is driving in conditions you shouldn't have been driving in basically.

agreed. It was so bad I considered turning back and abandoning the whole idea but I was within sight of my destination when it happened. I'd already had one twitch on the route and a slow speed oppo lock slide on a bend.

The white st in the middle of the road is oil on the ice, anything shiny is sheet ice.

I live in a cul de sac with a steep hilly bit right at the end of my drive which is like a fking ice rink at the moment. I'm currently playing a game of, spot the accident which is about to happen. So far I've seen 1 tt in a corsa barrel down and completely destroy the guy at the bottom of the hills wall, and I've just seen some tt in a citroen C2 barrel down the hill and wipe out the brand new BMW 3 series parked just round the corner at the bottom of the hill. Why are people such thick wkers when it comes to these stty conditions. I'm going to ignore the next inevitable crash because I'm already witness 1 on 2 insurance claims.
hehe

The people I was talking about here were absolutely caning it on a road with limited (but still some)grip and they really did some damage, and I've still got limited sympathy for them. I guess they've learned a lesson as have I. My car is not that badly damaged and it wont be a massive job to sort it. I've been thinking back and I really think there is nothing else I could've done to stop the accident once it started to slide. I know it could have been a ste site worse though.

It sits over the intercooler, and the cooler that is kept the better the engine runs under load, and I rather like it hehe

Do you think its wise to have taken a photo of a tyre with virtually no tread left on it. Either that or its a very bad angle for the photo.
they're brand new tyres the REO70s have got large tread blocks and they look knackered when they're not.

The thing that really pisses me off is that I'd been driving around for the previous week in snowy slushy icy conditions and bar a couple of twitches and easily controlable slides I had no real dramas. It was the fact that the road that I turned off of was perfectly driveable but the side road i turned onto was completely undriveable by the time i noticed (about 1 second) I was already curb bound and nothing I tried to avoid the crunch worked. If there had of been people, animals , other parked cars I wouldn't have fancied their chances of getting out of the way because they would have had no grip either. It was actualy quite fortunate that the kerb was the only thing to hit.

If you want to talk about this tyres weakness, it's ability to clear snow is compromised because of the treat pattern and width, but that doesn't mean it's worse than other tyres in the other areas of performance.
What you've said here is very true. These tyres do still function surprisingly well even in snow. As long as the snow isn't deeper than the grooves they are no worse than any other non winter specific tyre I've ever driven on.
