For some reason I've got it into my mind that I want a Beach Buggy so was wondering if anyone on here owns one. I have no experience with Volkswagens at all & although I could build one myself I'm tempted to buy one ready made & simply change it to my personal tastes. I'm not worried about speed, as long as it can sit comfortably at 80 then I'd probably be happy with that.

So I'm wondering if any one knows what exactly to look for in regards to engine size, type of gearbox, does & don'ts etc. Prices for anything half decent seem to start at about £4500 & go skyward, I saw one for £10,000. From what I can gather if I was to build my own I'd probably be looking at about £3000, but I don't seem to have the time these days for projects. Any advice would be much appreciated.

This is the sort of thing I'm thinking of.

Wow! Thanks for the quick replies.

Ok, maybe 80 is a bit optimistic but didn't know if there was an up to date gearbox available to fit.

Also I should have said that I know a bit about old technology owning a 1983 stage 1 & a 1960 Land Rover, also a 1967 convertible Camaro & can do my own mechanics. smile

I'm looking at those links now, thanks Mr Gear.

Thanks everyone.

So GP it is then although I'm still not sure whether to build my own or not. I think I'll do some more research & then make a decision. I'd briefly read about the Subaro engined alternatives but I've always liked the old technology so will probably stick with the VW but who knows, I'm not really sure what I want at the moment smile

That's some good information garethj which I've kept, thank you. But that's another thing, I've read that it's best to avoid the later models with semi trailing arms because the frame head would need changing, but the semi trailing arms are far superior over the swing axles. With my limited knowledge of VWs it sounds as though going for semi trailing arms means I'm going to need two donor cars & more much more work involved. Are they that much better or would I get just as much pleasure with swing axles, bearing in mind that it's just going to be a purely fun car to use when the sun comes out?

I do enjoy learning about different stuff but at the the moment with this I'm at the level where I'm in the dark with my shades on. smile

Thanks again everyone, lots more good information.

El Capitano, your old buggy looks fantastic & is pretty much what I've got my mind set on.

Frosted, no plans to take it anywhere really, I just like the look of them & want something I can jump in on a nice day & go for a spin. smile

I've been really busy with work the last couple of days but have a couple of days off next week so I'm going to take that time to try & learn some more & make a decision, although I'm starting to lean to the buying one already made idea.
