As much as I hate bringing this up - I remember a thread a while back where someone was fitting 400mm spacers on to his (I think) 106 - there were photos of the start, but it seemed to just stop...

Unfortunately, I can't find it now (neither Google nor PH search seem to be able to find it) - I'm intrigued as to how it ended*

* I suspect in a great big skip, but I'm curious....

I don't remember this but I'm intrigued. Tell me you meant '40mm' and not 400? Nobody's that daft, surely?
No, no - I'm pretty sure it was 400mm

Then it never happened and you're making it up.
I've done some IT pre-sales work, so it's entirely likely that this has seeped in to my real life smile

It's true and it's real I tells ya !

I know the car that you mean. it was a silver hatchback thingy with ridiculous size spacers on it.
Proof if proof were needed that it did indeed happen.

I think I've found the car and the offending owner - It was a Peugeot 106 and I'm pretty sure it was this one - but I could be wrong.

Note that I'm not just pointing fingers, but this seems to strike a chord....

Looks familiar but I am pretty sure it looked a lot worse than that pile of st.
Agreed - I'm not sure it was him, but it's something that makes me think that it was him.

Can't be bothered doing the sum, but i wonder how much of a thump/pothole it'd take to cause the wheel bolts to fail. Not much i imagine.
I bet he didn't even consider that - But I reckon it wouldn't take much.

I hate to poop on your party folks, but page 14 on of the link posted yields this from the Barry who owns it : "so, ive got rid of the stupid spacers as they were a crap idea"
Yes, we can see that - but it was/is a bit of a random idea in the first place.... I can think of at least one "random" thought of my own smile

What intrigues me the most is that clearly, someone with access to the tools and materials needed, thought nothing of making a set of 200 mm spacers and handing them to someone who is clearly totally effing clueless about vehicle engineering. At a guess, he didn't make the guy sign a disclaimer pointing out that the items pictured above are only to be used as paperweights and should absolutely, positively not be anywhere near an actual vehicle...
If someone turns up at a machine shop and asks for some wheel spacers to be machined then it is not their responsibility to advise on the design. No disclaimer is necssary as they were produced to the owners requirements and as a one off not subject to any performance guarantees. Plus the machinist was probably just curious to see what happened when the thing was driven at speed with masses of leverage on the hub bearing smile
It's also notable and wrong that he wasn't paid for it...

400mm spacers - 140mm would be tame in comparison, non?

I'm not sure....

(Sorry!)

Must. Learn. To. Read.

Quips about the Ambiwlans incident won't be welcome, but may be deserved

I did - and I've been an IT geek for 16 years.

Perhaps it's the "yoof" speak that has passed me by - not that I'm complaining in this instance....
