I'm looking for a bum-basic winter comuter.
Must be reliable, economical and have four wheels and a heater.

A friend has a 2002 Ka which she bought for an au-pair that she then sacked five weeks later; she's now selling the car (and swears never to have another 20 year old German au-pair).

36000 miles, a bit scruffy, £800 (the car, not the au-pair).

What do you think people?

Good advice so far folks; keep it coming.

20 mile commute, mostly dual carriageway, but some town centre stuff.

Currently having to use my '71 beetle, but don't want to torture it with the cold, wet weather and the salty roads.

I've got to ask, why did she sack the au-pair?
Something about climbing into bed with her and her husband after a few drinks I think...

Actually no, she was just really crap and immature, couldn't cook (despite saying she could), didn't integrate with the family and spent all her time shut away in her own room.

The pitfalls of au-pairs.

My wife chose ours; ugly, three stone overweight, vacant expression.

She was great, except she ate like a horse and farted a storm.

A very smelly storm too...
