hi folks,

I finally took the plunge and fitted the 100cell speedtech exhaust to the 996tt manual.
I spent hours searching forums, PMing owners, and listening to youtube vids of exhaust noises - all part of the quest to fix the only aspect of the car thats not perfect for me. perhaps these thoughts could be helpful to other owners also contemplating the plunge. The car is totally standard except a 997 short shift kit (if you havent yet - get one of those before the exhaust! bang for buck is very high!)

The product: it took 6 weeks to arrive. customs payment was a stinger. customer service from speedtech was excellent. gt-one fitted it and encountered zero problems (very rare they said). it is very well made and lightweight. No cel issues.
s
Performance: i really wasn't expecting much gain on such an already powerful car (and my objective was 'soul through noise' rather than power. I am pretty shocked at how much more responsive and agressive the car is. It really adds a savage edge to the acceleration. The slight delay in pick up when pressing the accelerator out of a tight bend (for example) has all but gone. Downshift rev blips are now much better. It feels like the car has been fitted with a lightweight flywheel!

Noise: my comparison points here are 987s, s2000, 997s. Low speed burbling - much better - 9964s like. Full throttle (windows down) - there is now a tuned boxer engine noise along side the mad Dyson noise- it sounds like a porsche! People have mentioned 'gt3 like' - and its not as glorious as that. But its a good effort. and it does sound very scary when you hear a noise reflection from a wall or tunnel! and just so much more engaging than the standard noise. with windows up the noise is also much more pleasing, although still not as good as the 987s with the roof up.

Drone and boom: the note is bassier and louder that stock, but surpisingly well mannered at idle and when under mild throttle. The gt-one guys actually called to flag there concerns as i had the 'baby on board' sign in the back (its our family car!) and they were concerned - but they called me as soon as they test drove it to say it was much quieter than they thought it would be and 'sounded nice'. (nb ive used gt-one for years now and cant rate them highly enough). There is drone between 2k and 3k. This exhaust is reported to be the least droney of them all but it is very noticable. That said, we quickly learned to drive 'around it' - selecting slightly different gears for low and motorway cruising. 6 month old archie slept very well on a return 3 hr trip at the weekend. The mrs is ok with it. the benefits hugely outweigh the drone bother for me. But it would be better if it wasnt there.

in summary - its quite a lot of money to do this. the solution isnt 100% perfect. but it has brought a whole heap of soul to the car and delivered performance improvements that have really surpised me.

happy to answer any qs, and i hope this is of some help to some 996tt folk.

thats the fella but they are made by these guys http://www.speedtechexhausts.com/
check the testimonials - very good reviews - you can see the full threads on rennlist ect and it felt like a safe choice by the time decided to do it

the ss was the 997 oem item on here http://www.porscheshop.co.uk/acatalog/porsche_997_...
i also fitted one to my 987s and it made a huge difference to the driving pleasure - its a critical touchpoint between man and machine and the increased precision in feel finally does the rest of the controls and engineering justice

cheers,
james

Hi Pete - i have the oem tip option - it would be really interesting to hear the difference sometime (would also love to sit in an x50!) - John said the sound was optimised for his 2.5 tips - but i really wanted the oem look.

Ill borrow a go pro and make some vids! very exciting!
Have to say that the exhaust is really growing on me every day - loads of great noises at different speeds and levels of throttle to play with! Good times!
