I've just come out of a 458 Spider which was awesome but not something to use every day & have decided to come back to Porsche.

I had a 997 Turbo Cab which was also awesome but seeing the spec & performance of the new GTS, I must admit the Carrera 4 GTS Cab is a very attractive option for me VS the new Turbo Cab because with a like for like spec, there is a difference of almost £19,000, for a performance difference of just 0.7 of a sec.

I'd appreciate any opinions from PHers who've driven or considered buying either of these 2 models. I'm currently leaning to the GTS. I normally go for the more expensive model but this time I'm not sure I can justify it..........

Thanks

Don't judge on the sprint times. It depends where you spend your miles, the devil is in the detail.

710nm of torque at 2,100 rpm vs 440nm at 5,750.

If in the mood for a cab I would wait to see what the 981 Spyder brings to the table.
Thanks Carl. Spider sounds exciting but I need the 2+2 layout to get my 1 & 3 year olds in the back, so it's got to be a 991 a Cab.

Yep the wife is fine with a Cab. Wouldn't be spanking it hard with kids in the car.

Callughan that's what I thought. GTS will be more fun. Exhaust note on the Turbo is disappointing whereas the GTS will have the sports exhaust. The badge isn't as good as the turbo & according to my OPC the supply of the GTS to the network will not be high so residual should be ok...... Tricky

It's a diff of 19k which I think is a big enough difference to consider the GTS. I want a GT3 but current gen is sold out so name at the top of the list for a next gen GT3 scheduled for end of 2016/ poss 2017

I'm not prepared to pay 15-20k over list for a used GT3 & the nearly new turbo Cabs that have been up for sale are 7+ months old & are saving only 3k on what I could get a new one for with discount. So for me new it is & subject to sleeping on it, it's the GTS this time round.

So you're considering one yourself then?

Thanks guys. Some very valid points.

I've had the chance to drive the new turbo & it is insanely quick. As quick as the 458 with Sports/ Sports Plus mode. Sadly these top end sports cars- Porsches, Lamborghinis, Ferraris, probably the new R8 Audi will all have turbo engines - I've been informed even Lamborghini are going that way too due to CO2 emissions like Ferrari are now having to thanks European Buerocrats.....! I'm off to Florida next week & will be in a humongous 5.0 litre Suburban SUV for the holiday. They don't care much about CO2 over there & those American engines sound FANTASTIC!!!

The main reason for coming back to Porsche is because I can get away with using it for work. Sadly I couldn't do that with the F. Yes the sound of the GTS will be awesome & the 19k saving is appealing, but the sheer power of the Turbo is mind blowing with virtually no lag. Such a shame you don't get a good exhaust note & truthfully I didn't have many burnups in my 997 Turbo. I actually had many more people challenging me back when I had a GTR lol, so if I'm not going to truly benefit from that extra power, then the GTS is the one. Yes as recommended, I need to drive one.......

Will let you know my decision. Will be on the phone to the OPC tomorrow. They've already got a deposit so I need to know when I can drive one & finally decide.

Lol not fussed what the neighbour thinks.

Giggle yes that's a good point re retro exhausts but I'd be a little worried about the manufacturers warranty being voided.

Revisiting those BHP/ RPM figures does make me now think the GTS isn't going to feel much different to the Carrera S/ 4S in terms of power so will I be disappointed as I thought the Carrera S was a bit gutless?

No GTS to drive until next year which really doesn't help. If I only one which would hold its value better at the 2 year point?

Decision made....... Whilst I am attracted to the sports exhaust & the saving on the GTS, I was struggling with it being 100BHP less than the Turbo, so after much deliberation I've decided that more power & almost 1 second quicker 0-60 is more important to me. Turbo cab it is.

Thanks to you all for your comments/ advice

Thanks Cymario.

I had a 996 C4S a number of years back then a 997 Turbo last year. As you say the 4WD is fantastic & these cars could out handle your ex 430 & my ex 458 any day.

Your car sounds like a great spec & I agree Porsche make brilliant sports cars. I will be using mine every day which I also couldn't do with my Ferrari. Looking forward to getting into mine! Enjoy yours too.

That's reassuring to read Callughan.

I've not driven a 991 GT3 yet but am top of the list for the next gen GT3 due in approx 2 years. Will run the Turbo till then & then enjoy a GT3. That decision is (1) because it's as quick as the Turbo & (2) doesn't really lose any money if you run it for a year or so whereas the Turbo will unfortunately lose some money.

Only small niggle with the Turbo is that you have to run it on Premium unleaded whereas the Carerras & my 458 can be run on standard unleaded. However I can live with that to enjoy the benefits the 991 model has to offer.

Thanks Chris for the link. I'm currently holidaying in Florida & for some reason your link will not open out here?

How long did it take to fit the exhaust to your beast?

Does it affect the Porsche warranty, fitting an after market exhaust upgrade?

Thanks Chris for those 2 other links. It does sound very good!

Ok I will speak to my OPC re warranty. I think it will be fine.

Having said good bye to the 458 I'm currently in a Golf GTD until the Turbo arrives early April. Can't wait to feel some power again. The Golf is nice but pretty gutless. Bought it as it barely depreciates in 6-7 months as a run around until the big boy arrives.
