The exhaust on my 2001 3.4 996 C2 needs replacing shortly, doesn't have PSE so what are the current ideas on the best system? Don't want anything too loud, definitely don't want boomy. Cost is a factor so nothing eye wateringly expensive please!

Not fussed about performance gains so no race cats or anything, just a good sounding, affordable system required.
Is it worth swapping the air filter for a K&N or similar? I'm sure I've read that the induction sound is much improved, possibly throttle response too?

Well I'm paying Gert Carnewal a visit in Belgium in a couple of weeks, give him a shout to see what options he has (the website isn't completely up to date).

Will post a vid up when I've got them installed, but according to internet sources his Carnewal GT exhausts sound PSE-like.
Not got the time to spare sadly frown

Bit of a long shot but I managed to pick up a lightly used OE pair off eBay for peanuts - another owner had taken them off his car at 20k miles and stuck them on a shelf as he upgraded to aftermarket. Might be worth a look?
If I'm going to replace them I'd like to upgrade to something better sounding than OE, PSE sounds sooooo much better so want something similar without the £!

Sorry to go off topic a bit but is it the original system that needs replacing?
As far as I'm aware, yes.

Right, been looking on eBay & Dansk seem to be the cheapest, followed by Milltek then interestingly, Powerflow which has a vid from a PH'er on the eBay ad. If that PH'er is reading this perhaps you could update us on it? I see the guys who sell it offer fitting & they're only about 45-60mins from me.

Can't remember what my local indie quoted me but it was over £1k & may even have been £1200, that was for a 'Cargraphic type' whatever that might be. Keen to spend less if possible as she is up for a big service etc this year too frown

I replaced my knackered original boxes with Dansk Stainless items - v good quality and sound - these do not drone when cruising and are very easy to live with. Under load they are far louder (good thing) before they settle down to a quieter tone under part throttle. Car has a nice burble on tickover. I also fitted a K&N cold air induction kit with cone filter (avoid just adding any sort of replacement panel filter) - all this at full rrp is about a grand. Induction noise brings its own little thing to the party.
Rolling road test after revealed increased power - 28bhp. Happy days!
£325.00 for that induction kit - think I can survive without!

Hayward and Scott do an excellent bypass mod on a standard exhaust set-up. More throaty noise when you want it, but not boomy when on the motorway. Quite a reasonable cost for us too.

Sadly I think that they're a bit far away from you though, they're in Essex frown
And my exhaust is in need of replacement...

That's helpful, Dansk were in the lead & now you've sown seeds of doubt in my mind.

Come on, must be lots of 996 owners who have changed the exhaust, what the hell do I buy? At this money I don't want to get it wrong!

To be fair, I was told that this had never happened before. The silencers were sent to Dansk for analysis, but I never heard the outcome. Happy with the replacements, but I'd probably try something different if going again.
What would you try out of interest?

There's a Gemballa one finishing soon on eBay, has anybody got any experience of these? Worth bidding on? If so, how much to bid?

A new one from Porsche or Bosal.
Get a new filter from Porsche. K&N will give you MAF problems with its oil.

Get porsche to fit these, cars over 10 years old qualify for half price labour rates.
Work for Porsche?!

Or a decent Indie who will almost certainly have any parts required, be just as cheap, if not cheaper than OPC & won't tell you your brakes are below the recommended limit etc etc...

Ok guys, thread resurrection.

Anybody had any experience with Cargraphic? My local Indie is recommending them, quoting c£1200 fitted so not a cheap option, he suggested sticking with standard but I'm keen to go with a sportier sound if I'm spending that much money!

Have a week or two to make up my mind now, still no further forward than I was in the beginning!

Booked In for next Friday, gone with Cargraphic 'Sound' option. Back to back video on You Tube sold it + the price is Ok too.

Will obviously post a video link once fitted & an update. Can't wait now I've finally decided!

Just bought a 996 c4s and interested in the same cheapest upgrade to better sound as Lordhavemurci.
Let me know how you get on with the option you selected.
Cargraphic has been on for just over a week, very happy with it. Sounds great when accelerating, as quiet as standard when cruising. Did a 40ml DC run yesterday & didn't notice it at all which was what I wanted.

It is about as loud as I would go, gives the car the voice it should always have had though smile
Will post a vid when I get around to it, before & after. There is one on You Tube that's very good already.

Thats exactly what i am looking for, thanks for confirming.
What was the total cost to supplyb and fit and was any remapping or other adjustment required?
Thanks
I was quoted £960-£1300, actual cost was about £1150 fitted, no remapping or adjustments. Think if you start changing Cats etc that may change.
