Good evening,

I am stressing out about buying a 996 Turbo Manual or a 996 GT3.

The GT3 is £10k more but may hold it's value better. However I have seen a few for sale for a while now. I am sure the GT3 will be more of a thrill on the right road, on the right day in the right weather.

The 996 Turbo is £10k cheaper and at the moment seem to sell quicker. However may not hold its value so well as 997 and 991 become cheaper. The Turbo will be more usable and safer on any road in any conditions.

I have seen both cars in the flesh and both are stunning. The Turbo has so much presence and the GT3 looks very special.

I really really can't decide.

If the prices were equal I would buy the GT3 but £10k is a big difference and the Turbo has just had £8k spent at a Porsche main dealer.

I don't understand how it's a toss up between the two. Have you driven either car yet? They are utterly chalk and cheese. Remember cars are for driving, all this theoretical talk of depreciation and price points is moot. You can't possibly live with a gt3 (IMO) mainly because it depreciates more slowly, you have to enjoy driving it and consider what you'll be using it for very carefully. The two cars (IMO) are not interchangeable.

When I first bought my previous 996.2GT3 I was shocked, yes shocked at how different it was to driving a turbo.
I think it is a valid toss up between the two. One is an exciting track car. The other is a devastating road car. I will not use the GT3 on a track and therefore maybe the Turbo is better suited. I watched a video interviewing Walter Rohrl and he said he would have a GT3 for track driving but a Turbo for the road. It is a good decision to have. I should point out I also own a Manual Aston Martin DB9 (which isn't going anywhere).

I disagee! Since you're already in Glasgow just head north and you have one of the very best GT3 playgrounds anywhere on Earth!

I have no interest in track driving but for entertaining road driving the GT3 is perfect. And with no nannying systems bar ABS every input (or mistake) is your own. You may not be the quickest but you'll have the biggest smile every time driving
I know exactly where that road is I think??? Is that the A93 just before Lecht Ski School?

Cheers for all the replies. Another concern I have is the amount of GT3's for sale. They are not selling quickly. Any opinions on that please?

A good Turbo will sell quickly but are they worth £50k now???

Good Morning,

Just an update. I have decided to hold off buying a 911 just now because I have no confidence in the market. If I wait I may buy a car cheaper than the prices today. If the market settles over the next 12 months then I don't think the same cars will be more expensive. I feel we are at the crest of a large wave and prices will start to normalise (in Porsche terms).

Here is my update to the post or should I say here is my new manual midnight Blue 966 Turbo. I collected it from Porsche Glasgow yesterday. It's stunning condition. Porsche car preperation must be second to none. I decided to go for the turbo because I will get more use out of it than a GT3 and I own a manual DB9 for dry days.

I did sit in a gt3 but didn't drive one. I have no doubt the GT3 is an awesome drive but the DB9 is surprising good to drive and I feel a million bucks driving it. The GT3 have too many limitations for my usage. Once I new the Turbo was for sale I knew it was the car for me and I think they are just cooler.

Firstly I love the Turbo. I took it for a long drive in the Cairngorms yesterday and I had all sorts of weather. I am no doubt I picked the correct car for me. First impressions are fast, tones of grip and confidence inspiring.

A comparison to the Aston DB9 which I Also love...

You don't get as much attention in the Porsche.

The Aston Sounds better but I went to an Airshow a couple months back and it sounded better than most of the Aircraft. However the Turbo does sound better than I expected. It does have an expensive, mechanical, Motorsport, forget valves in exhaust sound when giving it the beans. I did feel like Alan McNeish in Le Man at times .

In the Aston you feel like your sitting over the back wheels. In the Porsche I feel I am sitting further forward. There is more adjustment in the Aston seating position. The Aston has a more supple ride. At one point I couldn't get the CD in the slot in the player and thought if a GT3 is harder I couldn't live with that on the roads.

The Turbo Has the optional sport shift and it's great. Both gearchanges are excellent and mechanical. the Turbo clutch is lighter and easier to get off the line.

The Turbo has more grip. Period.

The Aston has lighter steering and the Porsche is heavier but I have not work out yet which has a faster rack. That might be a surprise because when I first drove the Aston the sterling caught me out a few times because it was so quick and I have owned an NSX and Elise for comparison. In the turbo you turn the steering and the front grips and doesn't let go until I'm out of breath. A few times I said to myself and the sheep that the Porsche engineers know what they are doing.

I will try and answer any questions about the two cars???

Two great manual GT cars. The Aston is one of the most beautiful cars and interiors ever made. One of the best sounding cars ever made and feels like sports car with comfortable suspension. Perfect!

The Turbo commands respect. I love the 996 looks and the headlights haven't bothered me once. I prefer it's "rounder" styling and wheels compared to a 997. When I drive the Turbo the heritage oozes out to me. The steering wheel and dials remind me of a Carrera GT and the engine feels and sounds every BHP of Motorsport. The engine feels like it has more power to give. The turbo feels mechanical and bomb proof. The steering feels heavy because it has so much grip. It might feel heavy because the car has more grip than my hands and arms have strength. Awesome!
