The 997 Appreciation Thread
Discussion
Since the 996 folks have become hugely popular over the last year and have currently at least two great threads running ( what is an 'early' 3.4 996? and What do you love about the 996?) I thought the need for a similar thread about the 997.
So please join me in posting pictures of your 997 and tell the internet what you love about the 997.
What I love most about the 997 is it's form. As has been said in the 996 thread, Harm Lagaay did a great job designing the 996 and the 997 is every bit as pretty with the benefit of round headlamps!
Only more beautiful is it's backside
I love the size of it, it is a relatively small car compared to an AMG GT, for instance
Although it looks rather big compared to a 993
I love how it is an easy car to do some works yourself
And I love how it looks covered in foam
And it even looks good when your friends take on of those blurry instahippster photos of you
So, what do you love about the 997?

Lovely! Sound really like the perfect drivetrain for a Targa!!And I love the Sport Design steering wheel!! IMO it is the most beautiful airbag wheel Porsche ever produced.
Will update the one on mine one day...
What is that black box on your dash? Radar detector of some form?

Nice to see the love for a black Targa
as above -
Gotta love the ability to cover miles in comfort and speed - what a 911 was made for.
Is that Lake Como? as above -

Also an average speed of 76mph over 800miles is pretty impressive.. French autoroutes no doubt
As you said, although a sportscar it is a great GT car! It is equally good cruising on the Autobahn at speed to cover ground quickly as it is on those tiny backroads around lake como.
What I also love about the 997 is that it so so many things to so many people.
On this thread so far we have seen people taking their C4S to snowy places, some use their their Targa to take the OH on holiday to the lakes in northern Italy, others take their GT3 RS to the Nürburgring or Spa. It can also be used as your daily and be left in an airport carpark!
We have seen a pretty wide range of cars with the 996, but with the 997 Porsche have taken that variety to the next level. There is a car in the range for almost everyone. Be it a basic all can do manual C2 coupe, an airy PDK C4S Targa, a furious GT3 RS 4.0, an "every box ticked" Turbo S in loud colurs, a cup car for the racedriver car or a tiptronic C4 convertible for the wife
Some like it because of how it looks, some because how it drives. Others love how it is a great allrounder and others like it because of the heritage.
We see people using it as a daily driver, other only take in out on high days only, while for other it is a pure track day or race car.
That variety is pretty unique and has always been a selling point for the Porsche 911. There are not many other cars around that are equally versatile.

- cough* C2S if you mean me.
Then had a look at your profile and saw you got both a gen2 C2S PDK and a gen2 C4S PDK. I thought "surely he has taken the C4S into the snow" a C4S for when it's raining or snowing and a C2S for when it's not. Or is it C2S for you and C4S for the wife

I think I am alone in saying I don't like the Lobster Claws.
I've those multi multi spokes on my summer tyres and five spokes on my winters (a god send to clean in comparison) but never been a fan of Lobsters.
I've got a similar setup as you, btw.
summer 19" SportDesign:
winter 18" CMS C12 five spokes:
They came with the car and I have yet to see them mounted. I'm still undecided on the looks.
Does anybody know CMS? I have never heard of them before.
I would have gone for 18" Porsche Carrera III wheels myself, but hey ho...
At least they are fitted with virtually new Conti T810 Sport tyres, so not to bad I guess!

the Sport designs are utter sods to keep clean !
Do try the Winters though. I've been astonished how the car (Targa4) does in snotty slushy rural winters.
I'm not too fussed about the car getting dirty most of the time. So my wheels are dirty most of the time..Do try the Winters though. I've been astonished how the car (Targa4) does in snotty slushy rural winters.
That said, recently I spent a couple of hours machine polishing the car and found those melamine foam sponges to be really, really great for cleaning the wheels! Not needing aggressive substances is a plus too!
For when it is really bad weather, I just take the Audi S4 (just before the C2 in my above pic). Poor car hasn't been used much since I got the Porsche
You are quite right, the engine is not the original one.
It's an early 997.1 C2 manual, with sports pack (-20mm + LSD + 19" sports design), full leather, cruise and that's it.
(no nav, no PASM, no Xenons, no anything)
@ 157'000km (in 2012) the car suffered from a terminal IMS failure.
Luckily the car had the extended Porsche warranty and the engine was replaced with the latest IMS design M96 engine (larger, non replaceable bearing).
So the engine has only 154'000km on it ( only 3'000km less than it went pop before)
I did the usual checks for any noise and had a good look at the left exhaust tip and could not see any sign of bore scoring. I had no boroscope (or any other professional inspection) done before purchase... From a private seller btw, so no warranties or comeback whatsoever.
I have a very relaxed attitude towards these things...
That was in May this year. Since then I did a small inspection (according to the Porsche schedule) incl. oil/filter, air filter, cabin filter, computer readout, etc. myself and that's it atm. The last big inspection at a specialist (incl. brake fluid, spark plugs, aux belts, cats) has been at the end of 2016.
I have an inch thick folder with all the receipts... A lot has been done to keep it in tip top condition! Each year it had two inspections, a small and a major one done, since it covered over 20k miles p.a.
Up until now there are no signs of bore scoring. No noise and no oil consumption whatsoever over 5k miles.
"What if it explodes tomorrow" I hear you ask. Well that is the problem of future me. I'm sure he will deal with it in one way or another. Until then today me keeps racking up those miles!
With a certain mileage it's about how much can you add and not how little! A much more enjoyable experience
Wanted to fit the CMS aftermarket winter wheels that came with the car when I bought it, but realized I needed new front tires. :-(
Either way, since I didn’t like the wheels I headed off to ebay for something else.
Found a set of used Carrera III wheels with correct ContiWinterContact TS810s for a very sensible price.
Coming from 19’’ Sport Design with worn out PS2 on the rears, I’m well chuffed with the smooth ride these 18’’ provide!
Also happy to report I was right in waiting for the tire change before investigating the possible wheel bearing noise. Luckily turned out to be excessive tire noise!
edited to turn the pictures..

BTW, your photos have inspired me to order a set of ski rack in the greatest summer heat!I went for some Seasuckers with suction cups. The main benefit (I hope) is mounting them in a similar style to Roger Moores Lotus
They have arrived from the states a couple of days ago. They are not cheap, but I should be able to use them on all cars!
Can't wait to try them out!!

Sold my 997.1.5 Turbo 2 years ago....and what a great car. What i did'nt like was the front bumper, the horrendous Turbo wheels the side intakes behind the doors and the fixed rear spoiler
I hear you! I'm a big fan of the uncluttered 991 form as well! Doesn't need to be a widebody either (altough they can be very, very nice too!).With the turbo'd vanilla Carrera of the 991.2 its quite amazing to have the same power in the C2S/C4S than you had two generations earlier in the Turbo!
Now you can have all the 996.1 Turbo power in a 991.2 C2 with a TechArt Chip and have a very stealth, very fast car.
Nice looking 997 convertible you have there, btw! The wheels suits it really good!!
