Is it winter closing in, have I turned soft or have it gone mad?

Found myself looking at a 997 Gen2, Targa 4S today. Silver, red interior, lots of options, extra leather etc.

Always liked the lines of them and they are a fairly uncommon sight.

........ But, a replacement for the Spyder?

It's that 911 itch going on, but I have a deep suspicion I would seriously regret getting rid. Got onto talk of a test drive, but I think I will hold back.

Hmmm... Think I was having one of those moments where a change seems like a good idea but not really thought through.

As much as I like the Targa I don't have that deep feeling/lust inside to swap the Spyder. I like the fact it is a bit different to the other 997s though and not a common choice.

My heads not telling me 100%... So where there is doubt, there is no doubt. No change.

But if I was going to scratch the 911 itch I think a 997 GTS (RWD) would be more my thing. Or forget about modern models and get a 993. If a 997 GTS was sat there at the same price point, right options, I would be having a very difficult decision to make.

As for the 981 Spyder, I've not picked up anything hinting at that yet. Even if it did come about, I don't think it would have that big effect on the 987 Spyder. I don't think a new one would be as daring with the roof solution or bodywork changes. The 987 will always be the original and with sales of that being relatively small I can see the next one being a dumbed down version of the concept. Looked at a Boxster GTS also today and that really did nothing for me. No desire to swap the Spyder with that.

As for 987.2 Spyders, I agree that they are very special things but I might be biased because I'm looking for one of them. I recently saw one at a OPC, it was parked next to a brand new 981 Cayman GTS, 981 Boxster and a 997.2 C2S and all these other cars seemed to pale in comparison.

I can't put my finger on why, but the Spyder looks even more impressive in person and it feels much more "exotic" than it has any right to be. I think prices will stay firm even if a 981 Spyder comes out, simply because the 987.2 was a great car platform, arguably the last of its kind, but many Porsche collectors wouldn't want to be seen in a run-of-the-mill Boxster S (sorry) so the Spyder/CR will be the logical choice.

Just to echo this really..

I think I would regret selling the Spyder on right now. Having something like the Targa or a GTS would give me something I'd likely use more of the time, but I'd have that nagging feeling I'd lost something special.

For the money, I just don't know what offers the driving thrills/purity, rarity, uniqueness. It's not a simple options special with the bodywork changes and roof.

It does punch above the weight of the 'humble' boxster roots with how special it feels.

Does it have aluminium parts in the interior for PDK and handbrake?

If so, could be the ex-Silverstone Demo?

Targa is a very rare sight on the road, its too heavy to be a direct replacement for the Spyder, very different drives.
I don't think it would be one of the same. It's based in Jersey and I've seen it on the roads over the years.

It's 2010, 9500 miles, up for 45k.

However it has been on the forecourt for ages now. Salesman says it won't shift because it is manual.

You're right, that car has been for sale for an age... I went and had a look at it in June but to be honest I thought it looked a bit tatty and uncared for considering the age & mileage.

I'm sure it was only £42k at the time, so there is definitely a deal to be done.

They did have two for a while, both in GT Silver. The other had a slightly higher mileage with a black interior and sold quite quickly to a guy here in Guernsey.
Yeah, the steering wheel in particular was very tatty. Quite why it hasn't been prepped to a better level is beyond me!

It would all clean up, but I was left wondering why it was so mucky in the first place. Couple of scratches on rear bumper from parking also.

A good detail and paint fixes would bring it up nicely. I'd also have sports exhaust high up on the shopping list also.

Jackson's aren't very good at prepping the cars in general. As someone who cares for their car it is very off putting to consider one 2nd hand when it clearly hadn't been loved by the previous owner.

Your point about Jacksons and car prep is so true. I find it almost laughable the premium prices they try and achieve when they don't make any effort to present the cars at their best. Personally I would not buy any car that was obviously not cared for given that if the visible bits are not looked after, the expensive invisible bits probably haven't been either.

I was very tempted to seek out a Spyder such as yours but few are about for sale so settled on the Boxster GTS. Never seen a Spyder in Guernsey except for a black visiting one. Is yours one of the Jersey whites?

We now have a Channel Islands forum on here. Got agreement a few weeks back. Hopefully it will gather momentum with local announcements, sales etc...
I'll look out for Channel Islands forum.

I thought one white spyder was taken off to guernsey from Jackson's in 2010. Maybe it didn't stay.

My Spyder is still the only one in Jersey as far as I am aware.

Do you have a link for the targa with red interior? Can't seem to find it....
Google; Jackson's Jersey. It should be on their stock list. I'm not sure it comes under a Porsche UK search on their site.

Ha ha ha.. I quite like a red interior with silver exterior.

It has a fair bit of extra leather optioned also just to overdose on the red! It could be toned down with grey/black mats (a little).

Not everyone's taste, but it would be boring if every interior was just black.

Anyway, I think I'm over this particular targa idea.
