Boxster Spyder Vs. Cayman R
Discussion
So, I recognise that this is a decidedly 1st world problem to have and I've asked the question on another thread but rather than derail that thread, I thought it worth posting here.
As you may know, I have a lovely black CR, which is a great little thing and IMHO could be made into an absolute weapon with a few choice mods. I'd see that spend as £10-15k over time, which, of course I'd never get back come sale time (if that ever happened). The car is already pretty spectacular as std and I don't see further depreciation as a massive issue.
However, I have been offered a Boxster Spyder and I'm sorely tempted. I can have it to my exact spec (PTS Gulf Blue), PCCB, sports tailpipe, yellow contrasting stitching.
It weighs about the same as the CR and has about the same amount of power as the CR post any performance enhancing mods. I also think it looks absolutely stunning! And I like the idea of having the roof down on days such as today.
It should also be a pretty safe place for my money, so that's good too. However it'll be £25k to £30k to swap, which is a lot - although man maths says this is really £10k to £20k as I will spend money on mods.
Kids both want the Spyder, Mrs doesn't care, I'm in a real quandary, so thought I'd ask the PH massive. What would you do?

I'd do 981 Spyder. and I had a CR
what you spend on mods, you never recover fully.
No Surrey. Yes I accept you never recover mods. I'm very keen on the Spyder for a number of reasons but my concerns are lack of hydraulic steering, no knowing whether this will actually be an issue or not until it's too late and I don't like e-parking brakes. But it does look absolutely gorgeous!I'd do 981 Spyder. and I had a CR

Agree with the above. I think the R will start to lose value once the GT4s land and a bunch of Rs hit the market in the next 6-12 months. I am prepared for the fanboy flack but it isn't that much over a standard S.
The 987 Spyder and 981 even more so are significantly different to their mainstream models to demand a premium over the long term.
Go for the 981 Spyder, it's a golden ticket and sell the R.
If you don't like the Spyder, sell it in 12 months for more than you paid for it and buy another R for a lot less than you sold your current one for. No lose situation in my opinion.
Cue Demon giving his opinion as FACT as usual......
Yes I broadly agree with this too!The 987 Spyder and 981 even more so are significantly different to their mainstream models to demand a premium over the long term.

I'd pick the 981 Spyder over the 987 Cayman R.
The GT4 is going to be the new 'must have' Cayman and will move the game on. I'd cash-in whilst values are strong and go for the new 981 Spyder which is far more usable than the original 987 Spyder (and looks so much better IMO).
Running costs will be lower on the new car, it should hold it's value and you could always pick-up another Cayman R later if you wanted to. Go for the new experience.
I am very tempted to do just that - ah decisions, decisions! The GT4 is going to be the new 'must have' Cayman and will move the game on. I'd cash-in whilst values are strong and go for the new 981 Spyder which is far more usable than the original 987 Spyder (and looks so much better IMO).

it's ok I'm in touch with my feminine side
I'm being semi-serious J-P. The 987 Spyder is a great drive but i did look a bit gay in it - I got fed up of telling people it was the Wife's car! Mind, I don't think the car sticker helped...

As for colours, not a fan of the yellow or black. Silver, blue, or red look OK, White is a bit Cheshire (and I live there), PTS is very personal, not a fan of pale blue. The new GT3RS purple would look fantastic.
I don't like yellow or black on the Boxster Spyder either. I'm not sure about white either but think it looks good in the official pics. Don't want red and silver, whilst very nice is a little tame. Don't like the GT3 RS purple but I think Gulf Blue would really suit it.Slippydiff said:

Ouch, Slippy! Anyway, if I get it Gulf Blue is high on the list for me. So, ner, ner, ner, ner, ner!
Hey, it's your money, your choice, your car. Whatever colour you have, I've no doubt you'll enjoy it P.S It's struck me you're absolutely f*cking useless at Man Maths. No return on all those mods for the Cayman R ?
is that what you've told SWMBO ? You're a complete disgrace to the other male petrolheads on this forum spouting such drivel
The conversation should go along the lines of this :
JP : "Well sweetpea, I could just keep the CR and mod it, and because all the mods I do will be reversible, the car will retain it's originality and thus it's value too, and as you know, they're an appreciating asset now. Plus when it comes the time to sell, I can remove the upgrades and sell them at little or no loss. It really is a case of win, win my dear"
Mrs JP : "Sometimes JP you amaze me, your brilliance knows no bounds. just do it. Oooh, by the way, did you see that holiday brochure/kitchen brochure I left on the sideboard ........"
ETA - might get a central orange stripe too! Although it might be a little too chavtastic!!

Yes I'm thinking about doing that too! Although that's a definite wind up for the Mrs, I'd have to say.
If you're in Surrey/Hants then I can save you the grief and you can park it in my garage and I will look after the keys for you. Slippydiff said:

Have no fear Slippy. My man maths is in perfect working order, there's no way I'd tell the Mrs that we'll never get the money back on mods (I'm not completely insane). Holiday is already agreed - if I get the car it's business class return to Mauritius in December

Sounds a fair deal to me ETA - might get a central orange stripe too! Although it might be a little too chavtastic!!

I am a bit bias but being no 1 on list at opc for a 981 Spyder I would choose the 987 Spyder any day of the week! But i am getting a Gt4. Would I change a CR for a 981 Spyder thats a tough one because same same but different! Are you a coupe or cab type of person! Coupe stick with what you have unless offered G4
It's a really tough call, glad I have some time to think about it! My car is great fun on track days and really suits my needs. I'm not really a huge fan of convertibles per se but I've always enjoyed every convertible I have owned from MGB to Mazda MX5 to Mini JCW to BMW 125i - they have all been fun in their own way and the ones that sounded good were even more enjoyable. The Boxster Spyder appeals because it sounds awesome but also looks stunning! I think it will be a great ownership experience but I'm still not sure that it's wise to get rid of the CR. It's spec is absolutely spot on for me, I have to say and with mods, it will be even more incredible.Beedub said:

i like to think of these type of cars as "roadsters" a roadster is a car designed to be of a sporting nature with no roof originally as the design brief, so i think s2k, z4m, TVR griff etc, i think of "convertibles" as a vehicle to remove the roof and cruise around, usually cars that were never intended to be a roadster in the original deign brief of the car.. The spyder will be perfect for you needs and i feel the game has moved on enough that you won't feel the urge to even mod it ( maybe some suspension tweeks).Sandy59 said:
You're right there about holiday cost, I just did this trip last month. Emirates about 5k+ for 2, same again+ for the rest at somewhere like this : http://www.oberoihotels.com/hotels-in-mauritius/. Highly recommended place though for total chill out. GT3 profit more than paid for it though so didn't feel quite so bad.
PS - Would recommend Emirates Business as well, Dubai to Mauritius on the A380, nice seperate bar etc and great service in general.
HI Sandy - yes we're thinking of going Emirates - but it's for 4 people!!! My poor wallet PS - Would recommend Emirates Business as well, Dubai to Mauritius on the A380, nice seperate bar etc and great service in general.

can you give up your R steering for this
review just posted by an owner in the GT4 section.
"Now for the big disappointment. I expected the steering to feel like a slightly muted version of my GT3’s and it was what I had most been looking forward to: the feeling that your brain is hard wired to the road, where you can just think the car around bends and feel every piece of road metal. The GT4 is nothing like that. It has decent feel once the tyres are working really hard but below that it doesn’t talk to you and it doesn’t even feel razor sharp."
Errr... no... probably not actually.review just posted by an owner in the GT4 section.

After much deliberation and umm-ing and ah-ing, I'm going to keep the CR and mod it. It was a tough decision and there are a lot of reasons why I'm still not sure if it's the right thing to do but I've wanted to mod the CR to my idea of perfection for a long time and I do want to see it through.
Also, I've driven a 981 Cayman GTS which has the X73 suspension and although I quite liked it, I thought that the CR's set-up was better.
If it was the choice of a GT4 over mine, then I think it would have been a tougher decision, but with the money I'd need to put down for the deposit I can do a lot to my car and the overall cost to change would allow me to get everything done! So think I'll keep the CR for a while longer!
