I recently picked up a 987.2 Cayman and have noticed that under hard acceleration, braking and cornering, I can hear what sounds like small stones / gravel sliding around on metal somewhere in the rear. At a guess, there's some road debris that's made its way into somewhere and is rattling around. It's not a major problem, but it's a little bit annoying.

Is this a common issue? What would be the best approach to getting this cleaned out - are there easy ways to taking bits off so that I can have a look, or would I be better off getting it to someone who knows what they're doing?

I don't think it's rattling - I have a separate series of rattles that happens on bumpy roads that I've just accepted as being normal. smile

This definitely sounds like loose stuff is rolling around on a hard plastic or metal surface, I can hear it rolling forward on braking and then getting flung to the back on acceleration. Stones sitting on the undertray sounds likely - do I have to get it onto a ramp to remove it, or can it just be done on the ground?

I've a gravel driveway at my place & have suffered terribly with stones flicking off the tyres into the brake calipers. The way they're designed is such that a small stone can get irretrievably wedged between the pad & the disc & the only way to get them out has been to take the wheel off & dig them out with a tool.

You can't miss it, the car sounds like the bearing's are blowing up every time you go round a corner. If you get that, it'll be a racing cert a stone is wedged in.

I've found stones & for that matter, any fixings you drop onto the undertray can be cleared by tapping the undertray until they work their way out to the side or at least in reach of your oily fingers.
I'll try and give it a good thud when I get home to see if I can get anything to move.

Have you checked the storage bins below the 3/4 windows?
I did - these are empty. It doesn't sound like a noise from inside the cabin, but could be wrong.....
