Hi people,
This just arrived. I wasn't searching for one but the price was low.
It's so different to anything I've worked on before it's like learning a new language. Kidney bowls etc..
I've been advised it might be a perfect donor for a backdate but given I don't know the first thing, it might be best just to keep it stock. I'm expecting to find much rust but this doesn't worry me as I can weld and have more patience than is sensible. The engine oil seals leak and cause smoke in the cabin plus the cold start jet isnt working but starts ok when warm. I'll put progress photos on when stuff happens. Just been looking at it for a week, trying to get my head round it.

It's a dog. I haven't taken on something this far gone in a long time.
Took it for an mot today, most of the fails were corrosion related.
Kidney bowls rusted, front wheel arches, inner wings etc.
Driving it was a bit of a surprise, cabin filled with oil smoke, needed a respirator!
Not much synchro in 1st, non in second. Enough power to keep up with traffic but nothing else.
So an engine and box rebuild as well as body repairs. Happy dayssmile

Is it supposed to have this whale tail? I'd prefer a flat bootlid.

Many thanks for all the encouragement/ derisionsmile
Black leather interior isn't too bad but will need a refresh.
I've decided to stick with it and make a start on the rust as soon as I can get some panels.
Anyone recomend a good supplier in the midlands?

Thanks again for the reality check, exactly the reason I'm on here.
I did sign up with ib when I got the car and spent a while looking at the sc section but decided to discuss it on here first as I like the vibe on ph and not sure if other forums will be shouty and/or cliquey. Also signed up to pelican parts for another view on it.
As for the car I'm taking a long thorough look at where the money will need to be spent and what order to do things.
My main concern is that once the process begins if I'm not careful it will become a basket case, if it stalls at this stage it won't be a happy project. This is supposed to be a jolly so if it gets stressful I'll be best looking at other projects.
My thoughts are maybe do one section at a time without disturbing any other parts and make slow progress without trashing the whole thing? I don't mind the idea of this taking 3-4 years, there's enough to do.

The horror, the horror!!

Decided to take a look behind the pop riveted n/s slam panel. Previous owner had begun a repair without investigating the soundness of the structure beneath, five pop rivets drilled and the full extent of the corrosion was revealed.
Should keep me busy for a whilesmile

The set screws fixing the door latch look like 12 point torx type things maybe M8, can anyone direct me towards a replacement for these? No rush, door won't be shut in a long time.

More tails of woe to follow, got some quality beer in the fridge, going to work on that for a while..

Apologies to the OP for dragging his thread further off topic. I'll post a couple more and then I get a proper thread together over the coming weeks.

I still have lots to sort on the car. Finish the interior properly, take the fan and cowl off to get powdercoated as I tried bead blasting and painting myself without success, rebuild the pedal box as the clutch pedal squeaks, fit the arch liners to protect my new metal, etc, ad infinitum. I'm not sure if they're ever finished, really.
Truly inspiring photos, I like the look of the rs bumpers, arch liners sound like a good idea too.
Good worksmile

More rust found now the front n/s wing is off

Left this in as a guide rather than removing it until there's new metal ready to replace it.

Feels like a start has been made, usual thing, loads of rust and paint flakes on the workshop floor.
Happy dayssmile

Been having fun taking stuff to bits.
I'd really like to delete te sunroof now the glass and headlining's out, can't work out how it's put together.
There's quite a bit of stuff that came out of the rear passenger area that looks like could be ditched, I'd prefer it to be a bit sparse and save the weight and clutter.

The panel adjacent to the b pilar was looking a bit flaky.
Decided to chop out the previous owners work plus some weld from a repair prior to that.
good metal was only to be found after removing some layers of corroded metal.
I've got strain gauges at various points around the car so it will show if it goes even slightly out of shape, the b pilar was getting a bit wobbly before the new metal went in, all solid now.
With this is done I can now start to repair the panel that the kidney bowl sits on.

The welds are strong, I'm putting in full weld to prevent water ingress.
Pretty welds would be nice but most of it will be buried under outer panels and never be seen, at least you can see I've not been tidying up after with the grinder.
posting on a public forum goes some way to show the rot's been removed and fixed in a robust manner.
Front inner wings are dreadful, stuff of nightmares but access is easy so I'm not too worried.
I'll put some photos on later

There's undoubtedly a lot of work there but having spent years restoring classic Mini's it looks pretty good for a 1980s car!
My thoughts exactly, luckily most of the rot has been found now.
Did find this last week,
hidden (behind the front under tray thing) after the arb had been polybushed and the wishbone replaced (sh) by PO
I think there will be more surprises to be found yet...
