360 manual gearboxes
Discussion
A friend of mine has a Ferrari 360 with a manual gearbox but the gearbox has a whine and a crunch into 5th gear and he is trying to find out if all 360 manual gearboxes are the same?
Are those symptoms common on a 360 gearbox that's covered a few miles and is replacing the gearbox with a 2nd hand unit more cost effective than repair?
Thanks

I would be wary of fitting a second hand box unless you could guarantee the quality of it.
It's a lot of labour to pull it out again if it's got a fault.
Personally I'd start by finding a good indie with experience of rebuilding these and have it removed and inspected. My decision what to do next would be based on their advice.
Synchro's are not actually that expensive. It depends what else is wrong.
At least when it's back together it"s a known quantity.
That's been my advice to him so far and I have even suggested changing the oil first because he's only just got the car and we don't know how old the oil is. Sure a replacement box from Ferrari is expensive but repair needn't be. I'll pass this on to him. It's a lot of labour to pull it out again if it's got a fault.

Where is he based and if just bought was it a private sale?
He lives in Corby and it was a private sale, the seller was honest enough to make him aware of the whine even though he couldn't hear it at the time. I think it only whines in 1 gear, I haven't been out in it yet.Gassing Station | Ferrari V8 | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
