Hi guys, we have another what car thread but I'm stuck on what to buy. I have a £3,000 budget (may stretch by a few hundred but i wanted to keep that for any work needed) and my list of requirements are as follows

must be under 3k
must have 200 bhp +
must have air con
under 100,000 miles preferred

be clean, prefer a full service history but not essential, i plan on doing a full service and cam belt etc when i get the car.

mpg doesn't matter as its a weekend toy more than anything and a bit of a project which i plan on keeping and turning into the perfect car.

the top of the list currently is a 225 bhp Seat Leon Cupra R or Audi TT 225

so is the Cupra R the best under 3k 225 bhp car or is there something out there that you would consider to be better...

I've had e46 330s, e36 m3s, 231 rx8, never really been a big fan of jap metal except civic type Rs and evos.

Didn't think about the megane 225... What are they like to own?

A modern Fwd for a weekend fun car?

An evo, mr2, 200sx,impreza etc etc are much more fun than your suggestions.

Dont like Jap cars? I'm guessing you are more concerned by perceived image rather than driving thrills.

Ive had Jap cars in the past and I've driven tuned Evos and Imprezas. There great 0-60 cars and good track cars but IMO a FWD hatch would be more fun on the road, hence the Cupra R being top of the list for now.

If i went Jap id have a Civic Type R, S2000 or Silvia S15 which are above my budget.

In all honesty image is a part of it, i want a fun to drive car thats built well and looks good.

My Civic (EP3) cost me less than £3k and ticks all of your boxes, they can be had for Cupra money.
i have looked into that and it is an option...

Not heard of that car before. What is it? Sounds rather sporty though. The QUESTION MARK GTI

Op, have you considered a Clio 182? Being so light I'm sure the power/weight is very similar to the Cupra and Megane. £3k would get you a really nice one as opposed to a slightly tired 225 or Cupra.

I did consider it but I've owned 1 before, was 1 of the best handling cars I've driven, a lot of fun. I am tempted but I wanted something I haven't had before, may take a look and see if I can stretch to a trophy!

The Saab on eBay looks great, may have to make a phone call on that

I'm amazed you have this opinion contrary to every review ever and are sticking to it.

Just all very backwards. There is no situation where a Leon Cupra R is more fun or more of an event than a good impreza or evo, as is well documented.

Image over substance it seems.
Reviews are by professionals who can take a 4wd wrx sti and drift it around a track at 100 whilst racing an evo. I'm sure the lack of interior quality is also well documented!

My opinion is that on road a decent hot hatch is more enjoyable, part of this is the fact that the limit is lower and you can enjoy the car more at a more street friendly speed.

If I was after a track car then top of my list would be either an E36 m3 or an Evo but I'm not after a track car and I'm after a fun car that looks good and feels well built.

A Leon Cupra the best handling car you have ever driven..... Wow.

I've owned one for 3-4 years along side a number of other cars. Put it this way it simply cannot even begin to compare to an E90 M sports handling its a different league of handling.

Try an E46 M3 that's way better than the E90
Try the Ariel Atom
Try a 911 Turbo
Try an RS6

I think the Cupra R does look good Mk2 great alloys amd in Grey a nice looking car.
I meant the Clio 182

I currently drive an E90 330i m sport and my previous car was an e46 m3, also I've had a 2005 rs6 and driven all manner of Porsches...
Clio is the only 1 I would consider buying again

E90 is great but too boring, doesn't feel like it has 258bhp

If your not into the cupra r how come you have had 1 for 3-4 years?

3k budget on a toy that's comfortable enough to take on a long journey to some decent a roads is what I'm after and a hot hatch seems to fit the bill.

OP needs to elaborate on his requirements...purely fun driving or care about image etc? I wouldn't be going for a TT for the former.

RE: the Impreza vs hot hatch debate...I had a Xsara VTS and an Impreza and the Xsara was every bit as much fun despite me being no fan of FWD. That isn't insulting the Impreza as the Xsara was bloody brilliant. Imprezas and Evos are very effective ways of going fast but a genuinely good (i.e. not VAG) hot hatch chassis can be just as lively to drive.

As it turned out the MK1 MX5 I had alongside was more fun than both despite it's mere 128bhp though! That's the only one I still own.
I suppose my original requirements were very vague. I thought id hear some suggestions which i hadn't thought of, such as the V6 saab or the alfa gtv6.

I'm after a weekend car thats fun to drive and looks good and isn't very common. As i buy and sell cars I usually have a few cars which i can use that fit the usual requirements so I don't have a need to 5 seats or a big boot but i do like hot hatchbacks hence why i short listed the Cupra R...

I had an old 1.8 MX5 with a LSD, a lot of fun but i only had it for a few weeks.
