Needs to be a LHD saloon the size of a Mercedes E Class and the like. C Class would be already in the too small side. Because it's large I would like to avoid 4-pots. Nothing too old. Let's say oldest MY 2000 or so.

I don't want a BMW.

Mercedes are great but basically all automatic. Very hard to find them with a stick and in good condition.

Jaguars, the affordable ones are the older models which look too conservative and have a reputation for being unreliable. I would love a XF but it's way out of my price range.

U.S. cars will be mainly automatic and in Europe are harder to find anyway.

Japanese I think there are only Lexus. But the ones the size of an E Class are not that good looking. The smaller saloons are, but they are too small.

Is there anything else out there that I may be forgetting?

But only the little 4-pots are manual, right? Too large for a 4-pot I think.

Get over the "i dont want a BMW" thing and get a 5 series, its the sensible thing to do if you want a big affordable RWD saloon

The E60 doesnt look bad
Sorry, I'm not able to get over it. And it's not only the looks.

S Type, the 4.0 or 4.2
The S-type is in the same look too conservative group as all old Jags. wink

You can get them with a manual petrol V6 or diesel straight six
Very difficult to find a petro V6 manual. I looked. I think only police had them.

A Few? There is only 1 V6 manual saloon and it's beat up. The rest are 4-pots or estates. wink

Look for one outside the Uk then. If you're buying in the U.K., you could be searching for a while for the exact details you want
I'm not buying in the U.K.. Hence why I asked for LHD. wink

Yes, but it shows that petrol manual V6 are available.
But very very hard to find. Like I said I looked before. Specially the 3.0 V6 is almost impossible to find in manual. 2.5 and 2.6 are slightly easier to find. But still very difficult and are a little on the weak side for such a large car. Right now there is nothing anywhere.

2.5l or 3.0l V6 4WD Galant? I know it breaks the RWD layout thing, but I think they're nice looking cars, and a neighbour of mine loved his estate version.
That would be the VR4 only. Try to find one in LHD and for a good price wink

But I really want RWD. Have a AWD now already.

I would disagree. The 2.5 engine is strong, 170bhp with plenty of torque, and whilst it is a "large" car it is also still quite light compared to modern cars. I had one, and it was good. They also did the 3.2 which replaced the 3.0 V6 at the same time as the 2.6 replaced the 2.5. There is also a straight 6 cylinder 2.5 diesel - but that's a BMW engine so it might not fit your desires.

Have you found any Audis you like in your range? I'm not familiar with them in the same way as I've never owned one. Probably easier to find on the continent again (which is where I assume you are looking) and their relative ubiquity also means they are likely to be cheap. A6/A8 might be in manual and have a decent enough engine.
I have driven them. The 3.0 V6 at around 208bhp is just adequate. The 2.5 struggles. The 2.0 is a mess.

The BMW engine would not be a problem. But it's also only 130bhp too.

Audis are FWD or AWD only. Like all VWs. No RWD. Besides I don't want another VW. Have a Passat 4motion estate now already.

Actually like I said I had already looked at the Omega. You didn't give me the idea. I didn't bother adding it to my list because I had already discovered that finding a 3.0 V6 manual and not abused is next to impossible.

I really don't know what Japanese stuff you could get that was also manual.

You've set yourself a very narrow criteria.
Yeah I think Japanese RWD saloons are only Lexus. But the larger E Class like is the one they tried to imitate Mercedes (again) and went for the quad round eye set up which looks hideous even on the Mercedes and also S-type. So it's probably the ugliest Lexus ever.

ok

any other criteria we don't know about?

'affordable' is subjective - how much are we talking about?

In Germany at least, anything vaguely roadworthy is northwards of €2000, whereas in the UK you've a selection of shed money cars at a grand

big cheap manual LHD saloons that haven't been abused are hard to find, more so the more things you rule out
It's true that cars here are more expensive than in the UK. But with €2000 you can buy a more than roadworthy car.

I'm looking in the €3000-4000 range.

Why does it need to be so big if you already have a Passat estate?
It just makes things easier so we don't have to fuss about the children and who has which car a the moment. I just sold my 2-doors for that reason.

You can pick one up for <£15k, which is affordable for some people.
If you've got a budget in mind, why not share it? Are we talking sub £1k, less than £5k, £5-10k? Give us a clue...
Above the budget and even if it wasn't it's a diva, expensive to run and unreliable. Not what I'm looking for. I don't need necessarily Toyota reliable. But also don't need something notoriously unreliable, hard to work on and expensive to repair.
