I’m considering buying a slightly newer 4x4, I’ve owned a hilux surf for 10 years now and I absolutely love it, however at 28 years old it’s starting to show its age a bit. I’ve also recently drove a 3 door shogun - 2004. To be honest I was surprised with how nice the shogun was inside too, it is the top spec one though.
I am thinking of buying a 5 door shogun or a perhaps 2010/11 ish grand Cherokee, would probably spend up to £8k or so.
What are your thoughts on what’s best? Not sure on the reliability of the jeeps of that age? Originally I was going to always go for a land cruiser but I’m not sure as obviously £8k gets a slightly older one and unless find a mint example will be more likely to have issues with corrosion, however I have absolutely loved the Toyota hilux surf this past decade.
Is there anything else I’m missing? Basically, something reliable, decent spec, plenty of room is what I want.

I'd avoid the shogun. They're plagued with fuel pump issues and 4wd selector faults. Rot like billy-oh as well
Which years were plagued with these issues?

Ive had experience with both.

MkIV shogun all the way. Mkiii shoguns had the pump issues, mkii had pump and head cracking issues. Ive had many of each, I love them :-)

8K will get you a 2008/9 Diamond. Mkiv's changed the pump / injector design so no more failng pumps as such.

These trucks hide their age / mileage well. So check for rear inner sills for rusting, tap engine mean chain / lifter issues.

These things arent the quietest, or smoothest, or most modern but there is tons of information on the net, tons of cheap parts, and reliable.

Cherokees ? Mmmm nope ! Leave alone.

Interesting, thank you. I’m certainly not worried a lot quiet or modern as my daily is a 28yr old truck 😁.
I was considering going for the mk4 but not read about them much yet. I’ve got a mk3 sat on the drive currently to use for a bit and I really like the high driving position. However I also do love the look of the jeep inside and out but never actually been in one.
