Having overcome an electrical meltdown I'm now going to do some engine stuff on the 1600 Vixen over the winter and as always one thing leads to another - while the engine is out is the 5 speed box conversion straightforward? Which Type 9 box/bellhousing should I look for and are there pits with snakes in regarding the mounts/propshaft and speedo cable? The clutch looks like it needs to go to cable type so what has to be done in that department?
Many thanks
Al

Phil
By bell housing challenge do you mean size? The RS2000 seems the best and being ali it saves weight.

Most modern driving is at a much higher speed than in the 60's and 70's, so it makes sense to change particularly as its a ford conversion - the 4th gear always seems too short to me anyway. I personally don't hold with the idea of bike carbs/zetec etc but the gearbox change is more subtle and not seen as a radical departure. To cruise at lower rpm has wear benefits and I don't think anyone is too bothered about mpg either way or we wouldn't be driving TVR's.
Does anyone know the reduction in rpm at 70mph?

Am I in the wrong Forum? It's like a script for a TVR related episode of Eastenders. No ones said 'you slaaaag' yet but my money says it's coming up.

I know Christmas is near lads, but leave the panto to the men dressed as ladies let's not have it here. This was a cracking thread and gave me some good pointers in between the slingshot.

I think I'll go for it and start getting the parts. Nothing is quick here though - too many projects. It looks like Sierra box, rs2000 bell housing, adapt brackets or fit plate, rig up a slave or do an internal one and mull over the speedo calibration.
Cheers

I have had a look at the ratios, and there is a long 1st gear for the type 9 box which is good news. It seems the ratios would be as follows, mph @4000rpm in brackets:

Sierra Standard Sierra Type 9 long 1st Vixen Standard -Bullet
1st 3.65 (20) 2.98 (24) 2.97 (24)
2nd 1.97 1.97 (36) 2.01 (35)
3rd 1.37 1.37 (52) 1.39 (51)
4th 1 1 (71) 1 (71)
5th 0.82 or 0.87 0.82 (87)

3.63 Diff ratio

This makes the type 9 with long gear good news. With very similar gearing to standard but 87mph at 4000rpm.
Anyone have a sierra box out there?

The speed was with 185/60/13's
With 205/65/15's its 186mph
205/60/15 180mph
195/60/15 177mph

You've lost the bodywork and your hair by now.

With what tire size wink

I'm running 205/65/15 at the rear, but might change to 205/60/15 or even 195/60/15

Looks like pinion and ring gear from a Dana44 might be able to give me a higher than 3.54:1 diff ratio(?)
As above earlier....keep yer hair on!!

So putting aside various exotic alternatives on engine, gearbox and shafts -
Are there issues with the speedo, what have people with conversions done about this?

The S2 Vixen 1600 that I have just sold (the one that you bid for on my recent ebay auction and then retracted your bid wink ) has had the 5 speed gearbox conversion carried out on it.

In the history file, that is with the car, a previous owner made a very documented written record of everything that he did to the car during his ownership which included the 5 speed conversion and a full list of all of the parts used with the part numbers as well. I am sure that most if not all of these parts are still available these days.

I could always photocopy the relevant pages of the conversion for you before the new owner of the Vixen comes to collect it.
Hi I have sent you a couple of PM'S - have you got them and can you send on the details of the conversion?

Many thanks

Hi. Sorry what with work and the limited time I have had recently I forgot all about taking a copy of the gearbox conversion and part numbers etc that were in the history file and unfortunately the car has now gone to its new home.

Sorry.
I thought that may be the case as I hadnt had a response to the pm's. Thanks anyway.

Is it the straight type of quick shift gear lever that is needed?
Thanks
